paperclipping
Time to head to Staples.
Paperclipping is the newest trend taking over the dating scene.
The baffling new term, courtesy of The Metro UK, describes when an ex contacts you months after ghosting you, sorta like Clippy, the not-so-helpful Microsoft assistant who would appear after you needed help with a task — but had already figured it out yourself.
The term was reportedly inspired by Brooklyn-based artist Samantha Rothenberg’s illustration featuring “damaged, flaky” people “who pop up for no reason at all.”
(Marisa Dellatto. ‘Paperclipping’ and other lousy new dating trends haunting your DMs. New York Post. July 30, 2019.)

beat the heat
This is certainly one way to beat the heat.
Sony, via its experimental First Flight program, is crowdfunding a wearable "air conditioner" known as the Reon Pocket that people could wear as they deal with high temperatures.
According to a translated version of the website, the device would reside in a pocket of a special t-shirt and would use the Peltier effect to lower or raise a person's body temperature. It could be lowered as much as 23 degrees Fahrenheit or raised as much as 14 degrees, depending upon a person's needs.
(Chris Ciaccia. Sony wants to build a wearable 'air conditioner.' Fox News. July 30, 2019.)

whisker
Presidential candidate Julian Castro is often mistaken for his identical twin brother, Joaquin, but now there’s a whisker of a difference between the two.
The 44-year-old siblings travel together on the campaign trail, where Julian, a former federal housing secretary mayor of San Antonio, Texas, is running for the Democratic nomination with the help of top adviser Joaquin, a US representative.
Reporters were thrown off by the pair at last month’s Democratic presidential debate in Miami, when the brothers entered the media room afterward in similar suits.
And at a candidates’ forum in April, organizers mistakenly used a photo of Joaquin.
(Nikki Schwab. Julian Castro’s twin brother grew a beard to avoid mix-ups. New York Post. July 28, 2019.)
now there’s a whisker of a difference between the two

zombie eater
zombie eater
A poll of 2,000 Americans examined their eating and snacking habits, discovering that the majority (88%) are “zombie eaters” – admitting to looking at screens while eating, from their TVs to their phones and laptops.
In fact, the average American studied will look at their phone more than two separate times during a single meal. On top of that, the average American will only have five “screen-free” meals a week.
(The majority of us are considered ‘zombie eaters.’ New York Post. July 23, 2019.)

dish
In the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, Michael Nganga is watching a Chinese Kung Fu movie.
His small home in Limuru village doesn't have running water and its walls are made from corrugated metal. Yet outside, where chickens roam the yard, the father-of-two, who repairs shoes for a living, has a large Chinese-built satellite dish that connects his old television set to hundreds of channels — many of which are being beamed from Beijing.
(Jenni Marsh. How China is slowly expanding its power in Africa, one TV set at a time. CNN. July 24, 2019.)
"10,000 Village Project"
a directional receiver having a concave usually parabolic reflector
especially : one used as a microwave or radar antenna
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
