clip the wings

"clip the wings"という成句をご存知でしょうか？用例を以下に示します。

コンテクストから大体言わんとするところは分かるのですが、辞書を引くと、


to restrain someone; to reduce or put an end to someone's privileges. (Alludes to clipping a bird's wings to keep it from flying away.)

とあります。字義通りに解釈すると（鳥などの）羽根をカットする、ということになりますが、羽根を切られてしまえば鳥は飛べなくなってしまう訳で、"clip the wings"とは行動を制限する、というような意味で用いられるようです。

さて、引用した記事で問題になっているのは格安航空券を手配するウェブサイトのサービスですが、そのサービスの中身が航空会社側にとっては問題なのだそうです。

詳しくは記事をお読みいただければと思いますが、乗り継ぎ便を指定するやり方で安い運賃で購入する仕組みがサービスに組み込まれているらしく、利用者にとっては有難い話ですが、実際には利用者は乗り継ぎするのではなく、（乗り継ぎの）経由地を目的地としており、航空会社にとっては機材のやりくりなどで問題が生じてくるそうです。

このような（航空会社にとって）厄介なサービス（仕組み）を"clip the wings"したい、というのが構図です。

記事のライターが敢えて"clip the wings"という成句を使った理由を推測すると、1つには飛行機の話題ということがあるでしょう。もう1つは、このサービスの開発者のことを、"a computer whiz"と表現しているところに着目します。

"whiz"は"wizard"の短縮形ともされているそうですが、素早く動く（飛ぶ）という意味の動詞"whiz"にも関連しているということで、これに掛けたイディオムの選択でもあるのかも知れません。
