トレードオフ ー trade-off

クリスマスは終わりましたが、アメリカではイブの24日から北東部で吹雪となり、荒れた天候だったようです。


CHICAGO -- If you live in the Northeast or Midwest, you're not dreaming: It's looking like a white Christmas. But the trade-off is hazardous driving conditions across New England and the Great Plains. Out west, the Rocky Mountains have been pounded this weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning through 5 p.m. on Monday for portions of central and northern Maine. Forecasters warned that snow and wind gusts up to 50 mph could make travel "dangerous to impossible."

In other parts of New England a winter storm warning was in effect, with up to a foot of snow possible in some areas.

クリスマスに雪が降るとロマンチックな印象がありますが、降り方によってはそうとばかりは言ってられません。

ホワイトクリスマスというのは穏やかな話であって、猛吹雪ともなれば・・・。

とありますが、この”trade-off”という表現、日本語でもカタカナで「トレードオフ」というものの、実はよく理解していない表現と思います。

「トレードオフ」というのは二律背反という日本語訳が相当するのですが、これは言わば、こちらを立てればあちらが立たず、という状況のことを指します。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryの定義で、


something that you do not want but must accept in order to have something that you want



とあるのが分かりやすいと思いました。

雪が降って交通機関に影響が出るのは困る、けれどもホワイトクリスマスは嬉しい、という矛盾した状況ですね。
