Jack Frost

関東地方はここ数日すっきりした秋晴れが続き、外に出て青空を仰ぐのが気持ち良いです。一方、朝晩の冷え込みは、気象予報によれば、11月並みとか。

それでは今日の記事の引用をどうぞ。

のっけから、"Jack Frost"という人が誰かの鼻に噛み付いたのか？とでも勘違いしそうな出だしですが！？

ここでの"Jack Frost"は実在する人の名前ではありません。単に寒さを意味する表現です。

第2段落を読めば、気候の話であることは明らかなんですけどね。

"Jack Frost"（もしくは、Old Jack Frostとも）は急な冷え込みや霜注意報、厳寒を擬人化した表現です。日本語の「冬将軍」に近いでしょうか？

さて、"Jack Frost"の用例を探していますと、興味深い記事に行き当たりました。

（9月時点の記事ですが）ロシアとウクライナの戦争は終わりが見えず、これから厳しい冬を迎えます。

プーチン大統領にとっては厳寒の到来が露軍に有利に働くという思惑があるようですが、どうやら思う通りには行かないようだ、という内容です。

ここでも、

But even Jack Frost might turn his back on Putin.

と出てきますが、擬人化の表現が効いていますね。
