もぐら叩き ― whack-a-mole

仕事で翻訳のチェックをしていたら、見慣れない単語にお目にかかりました。

いわゆるもぐら叩きゲームのことです。"whack"は”叩く”とか”打つ”という意味の動詞です。"mole"は”モグラ”ですね。スペルにバリエーションがあるのか、"whac-a-mole"とする場合もあるようです。

ひょっとして、もぐら叩きゲームを知らないという世代の人もいるのでしょうか？？ちなみに、こんな感じのゲームなのですが・・・。

私は日本で発明されたと思っていましたが、Wikipediaによりますとアメリカ発祥のようです。

もぐら叩きの歴史や変遷は上記Wikipediaにお任せするとして、言語的に興味深いのはこの単語が単なる”もぐら叩き”を指す名詞から、”もぐら叩きのように、反復的で、また徒労感のある試みややり方”を指す形容詞のように用いられるようになってきた点でしょう。

例えば、

whack-a-mole strategy
whack-a-mole approach

といったように用いられています。
