米国防省のトップの動静が不明という状況がここ数日報じられています。

アメリカという超大国の国防をあずかるトップの動静が何日間も不明というのはけしからん、ということなのですが、その後、前立腺がん治療のため入院しているということが明らかになった模様です。

各メディアは、国防相は辞任すべきとのオピニオン記事を出しています。

国防相の入院を何故早くに公表できなかったのかとも疑問が残る訳ですが、記事ではリーダーシップが問われていると批判しています。そして、

となる訳ですが、ここで使われているのが、

speaks volumes (about)

という慣用表現です。

多くの事を言う、〜を説明して余りがある、〜を十分に証明している、といった意味です。

ここでの動詞"speak"には話すという基本的な意味の他に、

（行為、状況などが）表す、示す、証明する

という意味があり、"indicate"、"prove"といった動詞と同義の意味合いで使われているものです。
