今年はパリオリンピックが開催されますが、フランスで農家などが規制緩和や待遇改善を要求してパリ郊外で大規模なデモを行っているとのニュースが入ってきました。

首都パリに通じる幹線道路などをトラクターで塞ぎ、交通が麻痺する事態になっているそうです。

見慣れない表現が使われているので引用しました。その表現とは、

do not give a mon­key’s about

というものです。辞書を引くと、

ちっとも構わない、へっちゃらだ

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

とあります。

about以下の事に対して、全く気にしない、気に留めない、という意味です。イギリス英語の俗語表現だそうです。

政府の農業政策に不満を訴える農家のデモには政治的な背景、即ち右とか左寄りの傾向があるのかと言えば、そんなものは無く、農家にとってはとにかく自身の生活が最大の関心事、というような話です。

タイミングを同じくして、ルーブル美術館で名画モナリザにかぼちゃのスープをぶちまけるという「環境テロ」の一件がありました。関与した女性活動家らはフランス国内における農業危機、劣悪な食料事情を訴えているとのことですが、窮状を訴える農家も美術品を汚して欲しいなどとはつゆほども思ってはいないかと。

ところで、この表現、サル（monkey）とありますが、monkey's〜の後が省略されているように見えます。実際、このフレーズのバリエーションとしては、

monkey's fart

monkey's toss

など、色々あるようです。

これらはmonkey's〜と付いて無くとも、

don't give a fart

don't give a toss

などのフレーズが、「ちっとも気にしない」という意味で用いられます。その意味では、サルはフレーズの意味する内容にはあまり関係なく、単なる強意で挿入されているようにも思われます。
