bender

"bender"というのは"bend"するもの、つまり曲げるもの、ということで、「やっとこ」のような道具を指す名詞ですが、スラングの意味に、酒を飲んで騒ぐこと、また大酒飲みという意味があります。

引用したのは先日偶々読んだ、フィッツジェラルドに関するインディペンデント紙の伝記的記事です。

昨年、2020年はフィッツジェラルドのちょうど没後80年でした。

そういうこともあって、私はフィッツジェラルドの著作を昨年、短編も含めて、かなり読みました。

44歳という若さで亡くなりましたが、晩年はアルコールに溺れる生活だったようです。

ところで、"bender"が酒飲みの意味を持つようになったことの解説は辞書に見当たらないのですが、以前取り上げた"elbow-bending"という表現を思い出しました。

グラス、もしくはジョッキを持って飲む際に肘を曲げることになるから"elbow-bending"なのですが、手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemismsでは、"bend"のエントリで、

to drink intoxicants to excess

Probably a shortened form of the euphemistic bend the elbow; from the locomotion od the drinking vessel

という説明をしています。

一方、研究社の英和大辞典では"bend the elbow"は載っていても、"bend"という動詞そのものには酒を飲むことの意味合いは見当たりません。

"bend"の過去分詞形である"bent"には、酔っ払った、の意味が載っています。
