世界中で衝撃が走ったトランプ元大統領暗殺未遂事件。容疑者は現場でシークレットサービスに射殺され、身元も明らかになりましたが、動機など不明な点が残るとの報道や、FBIは銃撃を何故防げなかったのかなどといった報道がタイムラインを席巻しています。

そんな中、トランプ氏の靴を取り上げた記事を興味深く読みました。

銃撃を受けて咄嗟にうつ伏せとなり、四方から覆い被さるSPらに揉みくちゃにされる中で、トランプ氏の片方の靴が脱げてしまったそうです。

In the mayhem of the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a single black Oxford shoe was left behind, abandoned on the platform where the former president was wounded by a sniper’s bullet and smothered in a Secret Service protective scrum.

Trump, it seems, lost one shoe in the melee on stage. That shoe – a sole survivor – reveals a lot about Trump as a consummate performer who cannily thinks first about himself and then about his audience. Under fire and on camera, the events in Butler offer a remarkable window into Trump’s primal instincts and mastery of political theater.

演説会場ステージの赤絨毯の上にポツンと残された、片方だけの黒いシューズの写真が印象的です。イメージ画像かと思いましたが、紛れもなく、世界史に残るであろう銃撃事件の騒動の中で脱げた靴を撮影したもののようです。

記事では、"Oxford(s)"と出てきます。"Oxford(s)"とは、

Oxford shoes

のことで、踵の低い、甲の上部を紐で結んで締め付ける短靴とされ、フォーマルな紳士靴の代名詞にもなっているものです。

オックスフォードはもちろんイギリスの地名です。オックスフォード大の学生がこのタイプの靴を好んで履いたことにちなむそうです。元々はハーフブーツのようなスタイルの靴（Oxonianと呼ばれた）だったそうですが、（何故かは知りませんが）これを嫌ったオックスフォード大の学生はくるぶしが見えるような短靴を好み、これが"Oxford"として定着したとか。

一般名詞化しており、小文字始まりで"oxford"というスペルのエントリで載せている辞書もあります。

トランプ氏はSPらに揉みくちゃにされ、安全な場所への移動を促されながらも、脱げた靴を取らせてくれと何度か主張したそうです。

結局のところ脱げた靴はそのまま残されたということなのですが・・・。

右耳に銃撃を受け流血しながらも、右手拳を高く突き上げ、力強さを主張したトランプ氏の写真は、星条旗の背景と共に世界中に配信され、大統領選はやはり、というべきか、あるいはさらに、というべきか、トランプ氏優位と目されます。

記事によれば、脱げた靴を何度か回収しようとしたものの、最終的にはその場に残したのは、残された片方の靴のイメージの効果を狙った、トランプ氏の役者的本能だという分析がされています。

ポツンと残された片方だけの靴から何を感じ取るかは人それぞれでしょう。

もうひとつ興味深い事実として、トランプ氏の靴がフォーマルな"Oxford"であったのに対し、バイデン氏の靴はゴム底の履き心地の良いスニーカータイプらしく、たかが靴、されど靴、両者の対比としては面白いと思いました。
