情景が目に浮かんでくるようですね。

テレビと書かれていますが、今時ではスマホやタブレット端末の動画でしょうか。

ぐずる幼な子に情報端末を持たせてその場を凌いでいる光景というのはよく目にするところです。昔はテレビを見過ぎるとバカになるとよく怒られたものですが、それがスマホ動画になっても変わるところはありません。

一方、子育てしている当事者、親御さんにしてみれば、外野に色々と批判されるのも心外でしょう。

そこで専門家の見解ということになる訳ですが、米国小児学会（AAP）によれば1歳半未満の子のスクリーンタイムはやはり制限されるべきだとのことです。

Recommendations from experts, like those from the AAP, are often presented without a “why” attached to them. For babies under 18 months, the concern is that time in front of a screen can supplant time moving and interacting with the real world, thus limiting opportunities for the child to develop cognitive and motor skills. For older toddlers and preschoolers, the AAP says studies show “associations between excessive television viewing in early childhood and cognitive language and social/emotional delays.”

その根拠は上記引用にある通りなのですが、そこに出てくる、

time in front of a screen can supplant time moving and interacting with the real world

というくだりの"supplant"という動詞に注目したいと思います。取って代わる、という意味です。

よく似たスペルの単語に"supple"（補う、の意）がありますが、別の単語であり、またこの記事のコンテクストでは全く逆の意味合いとなります。

"supplant"の語源を見てみましょう。

接頭辞となる部分、sup-はsub-が、その後に続く-plantのpに引っ張られてsup-となったものです。

そして-plantの部分ですが、これはラテン語plantaから来ており、足の裏を意味します。

つまり足の裏（足元）から引っくり返す、というのが原義で、単に取って代わるというよりも、（相手を）押しのけてその地位を占める、場所を奪い取る、という意味合いが強い表現です。

なお、ラテン語plantaには若芽、苗という意味もありますが、植物を意味する"plant"の語源にもなっています。
