新型コロナウィルスの感染拡大は欧米で急拡大しており、日本国内での終息も見えない状況です。そして、今年のオリンピック東京大会の開催が危ぶまれています。
予定通り準備を進め、予定通り開催という安倍首相やオリンピック準備委員会幹部の声は報じられてはいますが、だんだんと雲行きが怪しくなり、延期のオプションが検討されているなどとも報じられています。
オリンピック中止、もしくは延期ならば、その経済損失が数兆円と試算されるというような記事も見かけました。
一体どうなってしまうのか！？誰にも分かりません。

その文中、

というところですが、ここで使われている"break ranks with~"という表現は、
軍隊で隊列の所定の位置を離れる
同僚に反対したり、自分の政党を離党したりする
（ランダムハウス英和辞書）
という意味だそうで、今日初めてお目にかかりました。
この"rank"は、日本語でもカタカナで使う、地位とかポジションを意味する「ランク」と同じですが、整列していること、秩序正しく並んでいる状態も意味します。
特に兵隊の整列（横並び）のことが"rank"なのですが、整列する兵隊というものは同じ地位、身分の人達ですよね。（以前取り上げた、"rank and file"も参照下さい。）
従って、"break ranks"とはその整列状態を壊すというのが文字通りの意味ですから、自らの立場を離れて、（同じ身分にある）他人とは異なる行動を取る、というような意味で用いられます。
さて、記事の話題に戻って、オリンピック延期を明言した一人とは、元柔道選手でソウルオリンピックで銅メダルも取った山口香さんだと報じられています。
山口さんはJOC（日本オリンピック委員会）の理事だそうですが、オリンピック開催を推進する立場にある人が、延期すべきとの持論を持ち出した訳ですから、（反旗を翻したとは言わないまでも）ある意味JOC理事に求められる言動に反したということになります。
新型コロナウィルスの影響により、オリンピック予選大会などの様々なイベントが中止されたり、海外で合宿を行っていた選手が中止を余儀なくされて急遽帰国したりといった報道がされていますが、山口さんには、十分な準備が出来ていない状態でオリンピックに臨まなければならないのは選手にとっても観客にとっても不幸であるという考えがあるようです。
また、発言の背景には、実施されるかどうか分からないオリンピックに向けて、日々トレーニングで身を削っているアスリートたちの不安を代弁したものであると見るべきでしょう。
誰も言いませんが、延期するのなら早く決めてくれ、というのは、最高のパフォーマンスを発揮するために調整をしている選手の偽らざる本音かもしれません。

新型ウィルスとの戦いはまさに戦時体制。
中国・武漢での発生から日本や韓国などアジア圏で拡がってきた新型ウィルスですが、欧米での感染拡大には目を見張るものがあります。
トランプ米大統領は、この状況を戦時体制（war footing）と表現しました。

He spoke as he revived a Korean War-era measure allowing the US to ramp up production of vital medical supplies.

今日も新型ウィルスに関連する話題ですが、オーストラリアのメディアの記事からの引用です。

新型コロナウィルスが世界経済にもたらす影響は甚大です。
昨日聞いたニュースでは、日経平均株価が二千円以上も下落したとか、ニューヨーク市場の平均株価も大幅下落というものでした。
株や投資に疎く、投資信託などをやる余裕もないのですが、数年前にNISA口座だけは作ったことを思い出しました。投資していたらどんなことになっていたかと思うと・・・。

グーグルニュースを見ても、新型コロナウィルス関連のニュース記事ばかりで、他に話題は無いのかと思うくらいですが、今日も関連する記事からの引用となってしまいました。
