プリケー？ ― burner

トランプ大統領は携帯電話端末を2つ持っていて、1つは通話専用、もう1つはツイッター専用、と使い分けているそうです。

といっても、これはホワイトハウスのIT部門がハッキング対策のためにやっていることだそうで、当のトランプ大統領は、「面倒くさい！」と駄々をこねているとか！？

端末は1か月単位で交換する決まりだそうですが、拒否しているそうです。

さて、引用した文中で、


burner phone


という単語が目に留まりました。

初めて見たのですが、"burner"に何か特別な意味があったかと改めて辞書を引いてみましたが、エンジンやガスコンロのバーナーなど以外で、電話（phone）と結びつきそうな特別な意味は見当たりません。

ところが、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryで検索をしてみると、"burner phone"のエントリがありました！


a prepaid cell phone that is not bound to a contract with a carrier and is usually intended to be disposed of after use


と定義されているのですが、内容からするといわゆるコンビニなどで買えるプリペイド式の携帯電話のことであると解釈できます。

Merriam-Websterによると、2008年初出となっています。

ところで、なぜ"burner"なのでしょうか？この点についてMerriam-Websterでは解説はありません。

面倒な本人確認や書類などの手続きが不要で、ぱっと使えて、ぱっと手放せる、ということからでしょうか？

プリケーの類は犯罪の温床にもなっていると言われますが、証拠隠滅（つまり、燃やしてしまう）との連想からでしょうか？
