敢えて斜体にしましたのでお分かりと思いますが、記事に出てくる容疑者は1人なのに、その容疑者を指す代名詞は"they"、"their"、また"them"です。

記事のタイトルでも、

Colorado suspect Anderson Lee Aldrich told family they wanted to be ‘next mass killer’

とありますが、一見して違和感を禁じ得ませんでした。

2019年のWord of the Yearで、Merriam-Websterは、代名詞"they"を取り上げ、性自認が男性あるいは女性のいずれにも分類されない、いわゆる"non-binary"の人について用いられる代名詞として、辞書にもその用法を追加しました。

実のところ、容疑者は男性ですが、"non-binary"であるということです。

代名詞"they"の用法がこのように変化してきているということは知っていましたが、実際のニュース記事で普通に（つまり、特別な用法であることを示すような引用符など無しに）用いられているのを見るのは初めてでした。

以下に引用するFox Newsの記事では、容疑者が"non-binary"であることに触れ、代名詞"they"が用いられているという背景、また調書においても代名詞を"he"ではなく、"they"を用いるとの注釈を紹介しています。

また、Mr.の代わりに、“Mx.”を使うとあります。

Public defenders representing Anderson Lee Aldrich, the suspect accused of killing five people and injuring 17 more in a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, over the weekend, are describing the 22-year-old in court documents as "non-binary." 

In several standard motions filed on behalf of Aldrich on Tuesday, the public defenders refer to the suspect as "Mx. Aldrich." The motions deal with issues like unsealing documents and evidence gathering, not Aldrich's identity, and there was no elaboration about it.

"Anderson Aldrich is non-binary," reads the footnotes in the documents. "They use they/them pronouns, and for the purposes of all formal filings, will be addressed as Mx. Aldrich."

“Mx.”というのは、これまた性自認が"non-binary"である人に対して、Mr.やMs.、Mrs.に代わって用いられる敬称です。

なんと読むのかというと、meks（メックス）、またはmiks（ミクス）だそうです。

これも昨今のLGBTQ、性の多様化を受けて生まれた表現形式かと思いきや、使われ始めたのは1970年代ということですからほとんど半世紀前ということになります。

Merriam-Websterによれば、1970年代当時に敢えて男女の別を表明したくないという人たちが好んで用いたことに始まるそうです。

考えてみれば、既婚をMrs.、未婚をMissとする区別を嫌って生まれたのがMs.という敬称であったことを考えると、代名詞"they"やMx.という表現が普通に使われるようになったのもむべなるかな。
