クリスマスシーズンたけなわ、ですね。繁華街はきらびやかにライトアップされ、クリスマスソングがそこかしこの店舗に流れています。

小生の住む近所に、住宅外壁全面を覆い尽くすばかりの豪華な電飾でライトアップした、ちょっと有名な居宅があります。今年も目を楽しませてくれています。

さて、"nativity"という言葉をご存知でしょうか？キリストの降誕祭、またキリスト降誕の図を指し、大文字で始まる"Nativity"と書かれることが多いものです。

日本国内のクリスマスのイルミネーションではクリスマスツリーやサンタはあっても、"Nativity scene"を見ることは稀です。

幾つか最近のニュース記事から拾いました。

A small South Carolina town committee refused to remove a Nativity scene from a market parking lot after the mayor ordered it taken down from public property.

この記事では、自治体の首長が、キリスト教以外の宗教を信ずる人に配慮して"Nativity" sceneを制限したということです。

以下の記事はまた別の理由で"Nativity"が問題になったようです。

海岸沿いのイルミネーションは人々を楽しませていたようですが、市の規制に抵触するということで制限された模様です。

なんと、移民税関執行局（ICE）がキリストをその両親であるマリアとヨセフから取り上げようとするという演出の"Nativity" sceneを展示、反トランプ政権の政治的なメッセージが込められた内容が物議を醸しているものです。

日本のクリスマスはハッピー（能天気！？）で良かった・・・ですね。
