Beltway

The leak has sparked fears about the potential mishandling of classified national security information.

And now, a whole lot more of us know about Signal, a commercial messaging app that is celebrated for its security. If you already use Signal, you may be a Beltway insider, a journalist, a union organizer, or a rank-and-file American who is serious about privacy.
(Daniel de Visé. How safe is 'Signal'? Pros and cons of the privacy app in the Hegseth leak. USA Today. March 25, 2025.)

Beltway insider

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

The political establishment of Washington, DC, including federal officeholders, lobbyists, consultants, and media commentators.

Pennsylvania avenue

Pennsylvania Avenue

A lot of Democrats in Pennsylvania are big fans of Gov. Josh Shapiro — but not all of them want Kamala Harris to make him her vice presidential pick.

Cumberland County couple Candice and David Tritle said they’re happy with their gov where he is, and don’t want Pennsylvania to lose Shapiro to Pennsylvania Avenue.

“We think he’s a great governor and we’d hate to lose him,” Candice Tritle told The Post, adding that both she and David support Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly as Harris’ running mate.

bully pulpit

President Joe Biden is embracing his bully pulpit as he calls out resistance from former President Donald Trump and Republicans on Ukraine and Russia.

The tactic – which is playing out mostly in off-camera fundraisers and in public events - has become more pronounced in recent days as the president has latched on to House Republicans’ refusal to approve additional aid for Ukraine and Donald Trump’s refusal to condemn Russia for the death of Alexey Navalny, Vladimir Putin’s top critic.

The president has turned up the heat on Trump and Republicans in California this week in a series of fundraisers, venues where the president tends to speak a bit more freely and bluntly.
(Biden embraces bully pulpit as he escalates fight against Trump and GOP over Russia. CNN. February 22, 2024.)

bully pulpit

A position, especially a public office, from which one may expound one's views to a wide audience.

count the house

An NYU chemistry professor says he was fired after students complained his class was too hard.

“They weren’t coming to class, that’s for sure, because I can count the house,” Jones added, defending himself and saying the kids simply were not studying hard enough. “They weren’t watching the videos, and they weren’t able to answer the questions.”
(Ben Kesslen. NYU chem professor says he was fired after students complained class was too hard. New York Post. October 4, 2022.)

“They weren’t coming to class, that’s for sure, because I can count the house,”

For Esmé - With Love and Squalor"という作品がありますが、その中で以下のようなくだりがあります。

She was about thirteen, with straight ash-blond hair of ear-lobe length, an exquisite forehead, and blasé eyes that, I thought, might very possibly have counted the house.

また、その後の部分にも、"with those house-counting eyes of hers"というくだりがあります。

burn rubber

Slate magazine

I have seen a lot of lures, and none of them are working. Free Coffee Day! Free Continental Breakfast Day! Free Pretzel Day! Then they upped their game to “Free Red Bull and come see some adoptable puppies!” They literally had puppies in the office. They almost got me with that one. If it had been “Free Wine and Kittens,” I would have burned rubber to get there.
(Alison Green. The Incentives to Get Workers Back to the Office Aren’t Working. Here’s What Would. Slate. September  26, 2022.)

I would have burned rubber to get there.

de-Arching

McDonald's said Monday that it will sell its business in Russia, a little more than two months after it paused operations in the country due to its invasion of Ukraine.

McDonald's said Monday that it would start the process of "de-Arching" restaurants in Russia, meaning it would remove its name, logos, menus and branding from those locations. It will retain its trademarks in Russia, however, the company added.
(McDonald's says it will sell its Russia business after previously pausing operations due to Ukraine war. CNBC. May 16, 2022.)

"de-Arching"

As part of McDonald’s decision to exit, the Company is pursuing the sale of its entire portfolio of McDonald’s restaurants in Russia to a local buyer. The Company intends to initiate the process of “de-Arching” those restaurants, which entails no longer using the McDonald’s name, logo, branding, and menu, though the Company will continue to retain its trademarks in Russia.

panhandler

A deranged panhandler pleaded guilty Wednesday in Manhattan court for hitting a straphanger in the face with a metal pipe when the man refused to give him money.

Nieves broke Michael Vansluytman’s eye socket and fractured his skull. The victim, a 59-year-old MTA worker, was on a southbound No. 2 train near Chambers Street when the crazed beggar approached him in the car.

When Vansluytman said he didn’t speak Spanish, Nieves flew into a violent rage, smashing the stranger in the face with the pipe.
(Rebecca Rosenberg. Panhandler accused of bashing man with pipe gets seven years in prison. New York Post. March 20, 2019.)

take the helm

It's official - deputy defense secretary Patrick Shanahan will be taking the helm at the Pentagon as acting secretary of defense.

James Mattis, who resigned from the position over US President Donald Trump's decision to pull troops out of Syria, will be forced out of the role before 2019. In his resignation letter, Mattis had offered to stay on for two months in order to facilitate a smooth transition.

Instead, Trump announced his new pick in a tweet on Sunday. He praised Shanahan, writing: "Patrick has a long list of accomplishments while serving as Deputy, & previously Boeing. He will be great!"
(Aine Cain. Meet Patrick Shanahan, the former Boeing executive nicknamed 'Mr. Fix-It' who's replacing General James Mattis as Defense secretary. Business Insider. December 23, 2018.)

take the helm

payroll

Former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn, detained for the past five weeks on charges he underreported his income, will spend Christmas and New Year's Eve in a Tokyo jail cell.

The Tokyo District Court ruled Sunday that Ghosn can be held for a further 10 days without bail. The decision follows his rearrest on Friday on additional allegations of breach of trust. Japanese prosecutors petitioned the court to extend the executive's detention and restrict bail.

Since his arrest on November 19, Ghosn has been fired as chairman by both Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors.

Renault has appointed interim management but kept Ghosn on the payroll.
(Andrew Grainer. Carlos Ghosn will spend Christmas in a Tokyo jail cell. CNN. December 23, 2018.)

(Renault) kept Ghosn on the payroll

They cut him from their payroll.

under the hammer

Some of the most prized and significant possessions of the brilliant British physicist Stephen Hawking are to go under the hammer at Christie's in London later this month, including a copy of his PhD thesis, a script for the TV series "The Simpsons" and his earliest surviving wheelchair.

Hawking, who was also a cosmologist, astronomer, mathematician and a prolific author, died last March at age 76 having survived a debilitating disease that doctors said would kill him in his 20s. His landmark book a "A Brief History of Time," sold more than 10 million copies.
(Stephen Hawking's most prized possessions go under the hammer. CNN. October 22, 2018.)

go under the hammer

Downing Street

Inside a packed, heavily guarded room in the House of Commons, reporters gathered for an update on Tuesday about the suspects involved in the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain this year.

If the subject matter was unusual, so were the people doing the briefing.

They were not prosecutors or counterintelligence officers or even spokesmen from Downing Street. Rather, they were researchers from Bellingcat, an investigative group founded by Eliot Higgins, 39, a blogger who began by posting on a laptop from his apartment while babysitting his infant daughter.
(Armchair Investigators at Front of British Inquiry Into Spy Poisoning. The New York Times. October 9, 2018.)

spokesmen from Downing Street

The West Wing

Washington (CNN) — White House aides have been told to decide before the end of January whether they intend to leave the administration or stay through the November midterm elections, an official said, a deadline intended to help bring a sense of order to an anticipated staffing exodus.

President Donald Trump is finding it difficult to recruit staff to fill the vacancies, several people close to the West Wing say, as he faces the second year of his administration with daunting political odds and an ongoing Russia investigation.
(Facing staffing exodus, Trump struggles to fill West Wing. CNN. January 10, 2018.)

Facing staffing exodus, Trump struggles to fill West Wing

Earlier this month, a Kentucky store called Tobacco Road told customers that it would no longer accept money that patrons pulled out of their bras or socks, stirring up lots of Internet discussion about how disgusting it is to handle sweaty money. The sign read: “Due to rising temperatures, we will NOT be accepting boob or sock money.”

This isn’t the first time people have raised concerns about germs on money. There were 3,000 different types of bacteria on a set of $1 bills in New York, researchers at New York University found as part of a study called the “Dirty Money Project.” They included Staphylococcus aureus, which causes skin infections, and Escherichia coli, which causes food poisoning. (The researchers have not yet published the full results of their study.)
(Maria LaMagna. Your wallet and smartphone are totally covered in bacteria. New York Post. May 19, 2016.)

If you want to avoid bacteria, you might be better off paying with plastic than dollar bills.
(ibid.)

Big Blue

IBM bought The Weather Company because weather affects nearly everything

Big Blue is making a big bet that companies will want to spend money on more accurate weather forecasting.

IBM on Wednesday said that it had acquired most of The Weather Company including Weather.com and Weather Underground news sites as well as its vast trove of weather data. The deal does not include the company's cable television outlet, The Weather Channel, which will continue to broadcast.

IBM would not confirm the financial terms of the deal, but the Wall Street Journal reported that thte price was over $2 billion.
(Jonathan Vanian. IBM bought The Weather Company because weather affects nearly everything. Fortune. October 28, 2015.)

Big Blue

Another day, another change at McDonald's. The company announced it would switch to cage-free eggs within the next 10 years.

According to the USDA, cage-free eggs come from birds that can roam freely in an enclosed area with unlimited access to food and fresh water.

In March, the golden arches announced a commitment to using chickens raised without human antibiotics. The company might even drop liquid margarine in favor of real butter, according to reports that surfaced earlier this month.
(Cristina Alesci. McDonald's promises cage-free eggs in 10 Years. CNN. September 9, 2015.)

the golden arches

Foggy Bottom

Foggy Bottom

While heading up Foggy Bottom, the potential presidential hopeful exclusively used an email server registered to her home in Chappaqua, New York, according to the Associated Press and New York Times.
(John Patrick Pullen. How to Email Like Hillary Clinton. Time. March 4, 2015.)

Amazon is getting into the online grocery business. The brownstone Brooklyn neighborhood is the first in New York City for AmazonFresh, the new web retailer's point-and-click home for food shopping.

AmazonFresh has launched its Grocery Delivery service in Brooklyn and there are plans to expand it into new areas. Online retail Giant Amazon has chosen Brooklyn brownstone neighborhood as its first spot to launch its online grocery business. AmazonFresh, is going to offer more than 500,000 items for home delivery.
(Justin Chase. AmazonFresh online grocery service Debuts in Brooklyn. Capital OTC. October 19, 2014.)

さて、

the brownstone Brooklyn neighborhood
Brooklyn brownstone neighborhood

gas pedal

Trading the gas pedal for foot power or bike power to get to your job can also improve your mental health, British researchers report.

Daily commuters who stopping driving to work and started walking or riding a bike were under less stress and were able to concentrate better, the study showed.

And the authors noted that using public transportation also resulted in an improvement in commuters' psychological well-being.
(Mary Elizabeth. Walking, biking to work may boost mental health. CBS News. September 15, 2014.)

the gas pedal

To understand how General Motors allowed a problem with a small part to balloon into a crisis, look at the organization chart.

As of early last year, the director of vehicle safety was four rungs down the ladder from the CEO, according to a copy of the chart obtained by The Associated Press. Finance, sales and public relations had a direct path to the top.

"What's a higher priority than product safety?" asks Yale University management and law professor Jonathan Macey, author of a book on corporate governance. "The organization chart does obviously reflect a company's priorities."
(Tom Krisher. Before Recalls, Safety Was Low in GM's Company Hierarchy. The Associated Press. June 3, 2014.)

Remittances sound like small change, the crumbs of the United States' great prosperity. The majority of those who send remittances are on the bottom rungs of the economic ladder -- janitors, housekeepers, gardeners, dishwashers. The average remittance is about $240.
(San Francisco Chronicle. 2006.)

They do shake hands in Japan, but it's because they know we do it. We think a bow is subservience, but to them it's a sign of respect. In a business situation, the person on the lowest rung of the corporate ladder bows first and deepest.
(Washington Post. 1991.)

roof overhead

In more homes, the roof overhead is rented

Many metro areas have seen significant increases in rented single-family homes since 2006, Census Bureau data shows.

In the aftermath of a historic housing bust, rented single-family homes are on the rise in communities from coast to coast.

At least a fifth of all occupied single-family homes were rentals last year in 32 of the nation's top metropolitan regions, according to a USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. That's up from seven metros in 2006.

(the) roof overhead

Like any loan secured by a lien on your home, an equity credit line does create the risk of losing the roof over your head if you can't repay.
(Chicago Sun Times. 1993.)
