小生はランニングが好きなので当ブログでもランニングやマラソンの話題を何度か取り上げてきました。今日の1語もジョギングに関するものです。

走ることを習慣にしてからもう17年くらいになりますが、ランナーが気楽に取り組むことのできるボランティア活動に「ゴミ拾いジョギング」というのものがあるということを知ったのは、小生が走るようになってまだあまり日が経っていない頃のことです。その頃はジョギングやランニングに関する書籍や情報を色々と収集していて、その中で知り、興味を覚えました。

「ゴミ拾いジョギング」と書きましたが、最近ではもっぱら"plogging"と呼ばれるようです。

Plogging, which means running and litter picking, has grown in popularity across the world since it started in Sweden in 2016.

The term combines the Swedish word plocka upp (pick up) with jogging and has already been a success in Brighton, with groups like Leave No Trace running plogging events.

引用記事によれば、"plogging"という単語はスウェーデン語で（ゴミを）拾うという意味のplocka uppと、ジョギング（jogging）を組み合わせたかばん語で、2016年頃から使われるようになったとあります。

来月開催される東京マラソンを前に、都内のコースで"plogging"イベントがあると聞きました。

ランナー、ジョガーが日々走る道には色んなものが落ちているというのはよく経験していることで、いつも走らせてもらっているコースを綺麗にしたい、と思うのは自然な気持ちであると思います。

小生はボランティア活動に特に熱心という訳ではありませんが、近所で開催される花火大会の翌朝に、会場の河川敷や緑道でのゴミ拾いをかねたジョギングを毎年行っています。軍手にゴミ袋を握りひとりで出掛けますが、家庭用のゴミ袋（大、45リットル）に入りきらないくらいのゴミが集まります。ゴミを拾っているとランニングはおろか、ジョギングにもなりません（苦笑）。また、花火大会のある夏は気温が上昇するので、結構身体にこたえます。

個人的には"plogging"という言葉より「ゴミ拾いジョグ」の方がどちらかと言うと性に合っているように感じます。

narco-terrorism

世界に衝撃が走ったアメリカによるベネズエラへの軍事侵攻と大統領夫妻の拘束。拘束された大統領夫妻はニューヨークでの裁判にかけられ、最新の報道によれば、ニューヨークの裁判所に到着し、罪状認否が行われ、マドゥロ氏は無罪を主張したと報じられています。

その罪状とは、

narco-terrorism

であるとのことです。

Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro and his wife, politician and attorney Cilia Flores, made their first court appearance at a federal court in New York City Monday afternoon, when they both pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Maduro is facing charges of narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine-importation conspiracy and weapons charges. Flores and other senior Venezuelan officials, including Maduro's son, are also facing charges.

"narco-terrorism"という単語が、麻薬（narcotics）とテロリズム（terrorism）のかばん語になっているというのはスペルからも分かりやすいと思います。

しかし、具体的に、"narco-terrorism"とは何を指すのでしょうか？

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、ハイフン無しの"narcoterrorism"というエントリで、

Terrorism carried out to prevent interference with or to divert attention from illegal narcotics trafficking.

と定義しています。麻薬取り締まりを妨げる目的で行われるテロ行為という意味と解釈されます。

一方、Merriam-Webmaster Dictionaryでは、"narco-terrorism"（ハイフン有り）というエントリで、

terrorism financed by profits from illegal drug trafficking

と定義しています。こちらは、麻薬密売で得た収益を資金源として行われるテロ行為となりますが、意味合いがちょっと異なるように思われます。

トランプ政権によるマドゥロ大統領の拘束の背景には、ベネズエラ国内の麻薬組織を放置し、それがアメリカ国内へのコカイン密輸、流通になっているということがありました。してみると、今回の罪状である"narco-terrorism"は、違法薬物を蔓延させることによって他国を害しようとするテロ行為を指すようにも考えられ、上記のいずれの定義にも当てはまらないのではないかとも思われました。あるいは、マドゥロ政権自体、反米政権と見做されており、ベネズエラ国内の麻薬組織を野放しにしているという状況を米国に対する行為と断じたとの見方もされているようです。

"narco-terrorism"は日本語では麻薬テロと訳されるそうですが、その意味するところは今ひとつ曖昧にも思われます。

femicide

イタリア議会で"femicide"を処罰する法案が可決されたと報じられています。

"femicide"とはなんでしょうか？そのスペルから女性（female）の殺人（homicide）を指すのだろうと想像がつきます。果たして、"femicide"とは"the murder of a woman"、そして終身刑が科されるとのことです。人を殺めれば重罪というのは当たり前では、と思いました。

Deputies in the Italian parliament have voted unanimously to introduce the crime of femicide – the murder of a woman, motivated by gender – as a distinct law to be punished with a life sentence.

The idea of a law on femicide had been discussed in Italy before but the murder of Giulia Cecchettin by her ex-boyfriend was a tragedy that shocked the country into action.

法案が議会に提出された背景には、イタリア国内で増加している女性への暴力や殺害事件があるということです。2年前、当時大学生であった女性が元ボーイフレンドに刺殺され、その死体が遺棄された事件が法案提出の機運を高めたとの説明があります。

よって、"femicide"とは、パートナーや恋人などごく親しい関係にある男性による女性の殺害という定義になるようです。

別記事によれば、

という説明がされています。女性という弱い立場に付け込んだ犯罪という捉え方が一般的のようです。

日本においても元交際相手による殺害事件、ストーカー事案などが増加していると聞きます。いずれ、日本でも"femicide"という概念が導入されることになるのかとも思います。

ちょうど先日11月25日は、女性に対する暴力撤廃の国際デー（The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women）でしたが、それに合わせての法案可決であったということです。

three-peat

米メジャーリーグのワールドシリーズをドジャースが制覇、ファンの皆さんはお祭り騒ぎですね。

山本由伸投手がMVPを獲得、大谷翔平選手も大活躍とあって、日本人選手たちの活躍は日米首脳会談でも話題になりました。

週明けのニュースを見ていますと、

Shohei Ohtani ‘already thinking about’ World Series three-peat at Dodgers parade

という見出しが目に留まりました。

"three-peat"とは一体？

The Dodgers had only captured their second consecutive World Series title less than 48 hours earlier, but superstar Shohei Ohtani is already thinking about winning a third. 

Ohtani was taking part in the Dodgers’ championship parade in Hollywood on Monday when he was interviewed by Spectrum SportsNet LA.

He was asked if winning World Series championships was the “new norm” after Los Angeles had won back-to-back titles. 

“I’m already thinking about the third time we’re going to do this,” Ohtani replied through an interpreter.

記事を読むと想像が付きますが、"three-peat"とは、

三連覇

のことです。

"three"と"repeat"のかばん語となっています。

正直なところ、こんな単語があるとは知りませんでした。

「三連覇」を英語で、と言われたら、

three consecutive wins

とか訳していたと思いますが、今度からは"three-peat"と訳します（笑）

crapsule

記事の引用からお読みください。

健康な人の排泄物（つまり、う⚪︎ち）を病気の人の腸に移植して病気を治すという試みがあるそうです。

最近英国で行われた研究では薬剤耐性菌による感染症の治療に効果があったと報告されています。

名付けて、

crapsules

とは、健常者の糞便をフリーズドライにしたカプセル薬を指す言葉で、"crap"と"capsule"を組み合わせたかばん語です。

健康になれると分かっていても、カプセル剤だとしても、他人のう⚪︎ちを口にするのはやはり・・・。

「クソ」真面目な話です。念の為・・・。

vertiport

先日ネット配信のニュース動画を見ていたら、東京都が「空飛ぶクルマ」の実証実験を2026年にも開始するということでした。早ければ2027年中にも商用運行を開始するとのことで、東京の空をクルマが飛んでいるのを目にすることになるかも、という話でした。

「空飛ぶクルマ」なんて子供の頃読んだ漫画に出て来る遠い未来のことだと思っていましたが、この1〜2年のうちに実現するとは驚きです。

そして今日ですが、同じように"flying cars"の現実味に関するアメリカ国内ニュースを目にしました。

By 2028, the city of Orlando, Florida, could resemble scenes from “Blade Runner” and “The Fifth Element” — with traffic from flying cars buzzing overhead.

Orlando International Airport this week revealed it has been seeking partners who can help it develop launch and landing pads for “Jetsons”-esque flying cars called a “vertiport,” reported ArcaMax.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority will put out bids for the project next month, according to the outlet.

こちらはフロリダ州のオーランド国際空港において、空飛ぶクルマが離着陸できる整備を行うという構想で、2028年までに実現という計画は東京より1年遅いですが、やはり空飛ぶクルマの実現を視野に入れているということです。

空飛ぶクルマの実現に必要なインフラのひとつが、

vertiport

というものです。

これは、"vertical"と"port"を組み合わせた、いわゆるかばん語です。

垂直離着陸のためのポートということになります。カタカナでベルティポート（また、バーティポート）と書いているものもあります。

"vertiport"という単語は辞書には見当たりませんが、辞書に載る日も近いのかもしれません。

kidult

"kidult"という言葉をご存知でしょうか？

スペルから想像が付くと思いますが、kid（こども）とadult（オトナ）を組み合わせた、いわゆるかばn語です。

子供じみた大人、子供のような大人、という意味で、子供が欲しがるようなおもちゃを好む大人が当てはまります。

身体は大人になっても心（ハート）は子供のまま、子供心を失わない大人達を購買層に見据えたマーケットが存在します。

"kidult"市場は欧米のみならず、アジアでも熱い視線が注がれています。

個人的にはハロウィンのお菓子もトイザラスで売られているおもちゃにも興味はないのですが、子供の頃手にして遊んだおもちゃは心に残っていて、懐かしく感じることは多々あります。小生の世代だと、レゴブロックとかウルトラマンのビニール人形とか、プラモデルなんかですね。

touron

オーバーツーリズム（もしくは"mass tourism"）の弊害は今に始まったことではありませんが、受け入れる側である観光地や観光施設の立場からすると、旅行客というものはとんでもないことやアホなことをしでかす、迷惑極まり無いという見方があるということに我々は気がつくべきかも知れません。

例えばの話しは今回引用の記事にも出てくるのですが、こうした「アホな旅行客」を指して、

touron

というそうです。これは、touristとmoronのかばん語です。

Webster added 630 words to its dictionary in 2023. We’d like to suggest one more: “touron.”

記事の出典であるNew York Post紙は"touron"を辞書のエントリに追加することを提案しています。

この単語を載せている辞書はなさそうですが、実のところ"touron"なる単語は米国の自然公園のスタッフによる創作として1990年代からあるそうです。（Wikipedia）

よほと腹に据えかねるものがあったのでしょうか。私も旅行では"touron"と呼ばれないような振る舞いを心掛けたいと思います。

chump

アメリカ大統領選の争点のひとつには、勿論ですが、経済対策があります。

インフレによる物価高が進み、生活が苦しくなっている庶民の票を獲得せんと、両候補が議論を戦わせていますが、ハリス氏がトランプ氏は企業経営者などの富裕層だけが恩恵を受ける減税しかしてこなかったと批判すると、トランプ氏側は労働者に対する減税措置として、残業代やチップに課税しないという方針を打ち出しました。

米国民ならずとも、本当か？と訝りたくなりますが、民主党側から早速批判的に取り上げられているようです。

Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden threw shade at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Friday over Trump’s latest campaign promise: to eliminate income taxes on overtime pay.

“Donald Trump is losing, and these tax proposals he’s floating out of desperation are as fake as his tan,” Wyden said in a statement.

The Oregon Democrat who leads the Senate tax writing panel said the former president “knows Republicans in Congress have no intention of passing this stuff.”

“It’s obvious his newfound concern for working people is a fraud,” Wyden argued, “because as president he undermined overtime protections for workers.”

He added, “You can always count on him to treat workers like chumps he can buy off with empty campaign promises here and there.”

曰く、トランプ氏は選挙に負けそうなのでこんな突拍子もないことを言い始めたのだと、非難しています。

treat workers like chumps he can buy off with empty campaign promises

というくだりがありますが、"chump"という単語が出てきます。"champ"（champion）ではありません。

辞書を引くと、丸太の木切れを指すこの単語は、

ばか、うすのろ；騙されやすい「かも」

を意味するとあります。

語源はよく分かっていないようですが、塊を指す"chunk"と"lump"の混成による単語、いわゆるかばん語のようです。

支持率を上げる為ならば出来ないことでもやると口に出す政治家がいるものですが、有権者もバカばかりではありません。

日本では自民党総裁選、立憲民主党の代表選で候補が乱立、様々な主張を戦わせておりますが、果たして実現可能なのか、そもそも実現する気があるのか？

引用した記事でもうひとつ興味深く思った表現ですが、トランプ氏の減税措置を、

as fake as his tan

と切って捨てています。

面白い表現だなあと思い調べてみたのですが、このような慣用表現がある訳では無いようです。文字通り、トランプ氏の主張する主張の内容が同氏の「日焼け」（tan）と同様に嘘っぽい、というような意味になります。

トランプ氏の顔はよく日焼けしており精悍なイメージを与えますが、あの日焼けはフェイクだという噂がかねてからあるようです。

トランプ氏はゴルフをするので、私はそれでよく日焼けしているのだと思っていましたが、日焼けしているように見せる為にクリームを塗ったり、施術したりすることを"fake tan"というそうで、恐らくトランプ氏も「見栄え」を良くするためにそうした処置をしているという見方が専らのようです。これは知りませんでした。

政治家の見た目や上辺だけの皮相な主張に騙されてはいけません。

greedflation

インフレの影響が家計に重くのしかかる現実を痛感する今日この頃。

以前、"shrinkflation"というかばん語を取り上げたことがありますが、同じような表現で、

greedflation

というコトバが少し前から使われていると知りました。

説明の必要はないかも知れませんが、"greed"（貪欲）と"inflation"（インフレ）から成る単語です。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary（オンライン版）で、"greedflation"は以下のように定義されています。

Greedflation is an increase in the price of goods and services caused by businesses increasing their prices by more than their costs have risen.

簡単に言うと、コスト高を口実に実質以上の価格転嫁をしている、ということです。つまり、企業体質として貪欲さ（利益至上主義）がこうした事態を招いているという批判が込められています。

こういうことをするのはやはり大手企業であり、以下引用する記事ではとある大手ホールセーラーがやり玉にあがっています。

 物やサービスの値段がある程度上がるのは仕方ないとしても、それが妥当な値上げ幅なのか、ということですよね。

sexcapade

米国の上院の会議室で撮影されたと思しき性行為の録画ビデオがネットに流出し、騒ぎになっています。

The United States Senate was rocked by a gay sex tape scandal after a video of two men engaged in an explicit sex act in a Senate hearing room appeared online.

U.S. Capitol Police told Fox News they were aware of an amateur pornographic video published by the Daily Caller late Friday. The extremely graphic footage shows someone identified as a congressional staffer having sex with another man on the dais in hearing room 216 of the Hart Senate Office Building.

According to Turley, the charges would hinge on whether the unofficial use of a Senate hearing room for the sexcapade would constitute trespass.

問題の録画は、議会スタッフの男性が全裸で会議室のテーブルの上で他の男性と性行為に及んでいるという生々しいもので、同性愛者のオンラインコミュニティにアップロードされていたものをニュースサイトのDaily Callerが取り上げました。

今日取り上げるのは、

sexcapade

という単語です。

これは"sex"と"escapade"のかばん語です。

"escapade"には羽目を外すこと、いたずら、という意味合いがありますが、重要法案の審議や聴聞が行われる場を冒涜するような行為は明らかに場違いな行為であり、タダで済む話ではありません。

報道を受けて、民主党上院議員は問題のスタッフを解雇したと発表しました。

turducken

デサンティス・フロリダ州知事が大統領選への出馬を正式に表明しました。

 

ツイッターのイベントでのアナウンスだったそうですが、サーバーの技術的な問題が発生したために、イベントの開始が遅れるというハプニングがあったと報じられています。

 

多くのメディアでは、デサンティス氏とイーロン・マスク氏が懇意であることに触れていますが、今回の正式表明が行われたイベントはつい最近までマスク氏がCEOを務めていたツイッターというプラットフォーム、そして共和党支持者である大物起業家のDavid Sacks氏がその大役を買って出た模様です。

という見慣れない単語が出てきます。

 

初めて見る単語なのですが、スペルもちょっと変わっています。ドイツ語のスペルみたいにも見えます。手元の英和辞書には載っていませんでした。

 

Merriam-Websterオンラインで検索すると、以下の定義が出てきます。

なんじゃ、これは？

 

骨抜きにしたチキンを鴨肉に詰めて、更に七面鳥に詰めて・・・！？

 

解説によれば、"turducken"とは、

を合わせた、いわゆるかばん語（portmanteau）だということで、ちょっと変わったスペルの背景は分かりました。

 

ネットで検索してみると、"turducken"なる料理は米南部ルイジアナ州の名物料理らしく、鶏肉を詰めたカモ肉をさらに七面鳥に詰めて焼き上げるものだとか。

 

そんな料理があるんですねぇ。

 

で、記事では、

とあるんですが、これが何を言わんとしているのかちょっと分かりませんでしたが、恐らく、デサンティス知事、マスク氏、そしてSacks氏、という、功成り名遂げた三者に対する皮肉だろうと。

サッカーワールドカップ熱戦が続いています。残念ながら日本代表はクロアチアにPK戦で敗れ、8強入りはなりませんでしたが、1次リーグで強豪ドイツとスペインに勝利した実績は歴史に刻まれることでしょう。

日本チームの話題ではありませんが、同じく決勝トーナメントラウンド16の試合では、オーストラリア代表チームがアルゼンチンと戦って敗れました。

敗退を受けて帰国した豪州チームはシドニー空港でファンの歓待を受けました。

選手はSoccer playerですが、"Socceroos (players)"という変わったスペルの単語が見られますね？

"Socceroos"というのは"soccer"と"kangaroo"を合わせたかばん語で、オーストラリア代表チームのニックネームになっているものです。

カンガルーは言わずと知れた、オーストラリアを代表する動物です。ジャンプ力と敏捷なイメージはサッカーチームのニックネームによく合うと思います。ウィキペディアによれば、"Socceroos"の名付け親はシドニーのジャーナリストで、1967年に遡るそうです。

11月も明日でお終い、明後日からは12月で2022年も残すところ1ヶ月です。

この時季の恒例ですが、Word of the Yearが発表されています。

今日知ったところでは、Merriam-Webster は2022年のWord of the Yearに"gaslighting"を選びました。が、実のところ、2018年のOxfordのWord of the Yearに選出されており、当ブログでもその際に取り上げました。

ということで、他の辞書によるWord of the Yearを見ていますと、Collins Dictionaryは、"permacrisis"という単語を取り上げています。

As nations across the globe face a plethora of ongoing crises, the Collins English Dictionary Tuesday revealed its 2022 word of the year to be "permacrisis," a term to describe such events.

"Permacrisis" is a noun defined by the U.K.-based publisher HarperCollins as "an extended period of instability and insecurity, especially one resulting from a series of catastrophic events." 

A blog post on the Collins Dictionary website by writer David Shariatmadari noted that the term rings true because of the war in Ukraine, climate change challenges, political instability and the surge in inflation.

"permacrisis"は、"permanent"と"crisis"のかばん語です。危機的な状況が長く続いていることを指す表現です。

2022年を振り返れば、ロシアのウクライナ侵攻、気候変動による危機、（英国では）首相交代による政治不安定、またインフレ危機、と次から次へと危機が襲って来る状況を捉えた"permacrisis"という表現は腑に落ちますが、新型コロナ禍は入っていませんね！？

Friendsgiving

日本の勤労感謝の日は水曜祝日が終わったところですが、アメリカでは木曜日から感謝祭（Thanksgiving）を皮切りにホリデーシーズンがスタートしました。

今日金曜日は祝日ではありませんが、土日に“ブリッジ”して連休にする人が多く、また最近では日本でもすっかり定着した感のあるブラックフライデー（Black Friday）でもあります。翌週月曜日は「サイバーマンデー」（Cyber Monday）と続き、以降、クリスマスまでのカウントダウンと続きます。

感謝祭は家族が集い、豪華なディナーを囲むのが恒例です。この時ばかりは、日本人が年末年始に家族と共に過ごすように、アメリカでも家族が集まるようです。

一方、近年では、家族が遠く離れているような境遇にある人は、友達同士で感謝祭を祝うそうで、"Friendsgiving"と呼ばれるそうです。

Today, I'm one of the millions of Americans who will be celebrating Thanksgiving with friends instead of family.

It's not that I don't love my family. They just live hundreds of miles away in St. Louis. I'll instead be heading to downtown Los Angeles and hanging out with a whole bunch of other gay men.

 "Thanksgiving with friends"で、"Friendsgiving"、典型的なかばん語ですね。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryにもエントリがあるということですが、"Friendsgiving"という単語は2007年頃から使われ始めたところ、酒類メーカーの広告で一気に認知度が高まったとか。

コマーシャリズムが文化や言葉に及ぼす影響は大きいです。

fexting

ファーストレディ、すなわちバイデン大統領夫人である、ジル・バイデンさんが雑誌のインタビューで使った、"fexting"という単語が取り沙汰されています。

話はバイデン氏が副大統領であった時に遡るようなのですが、夫妻は意見の対立があった時も表向きには口論する姿を見せずに、"fexting"によりしのいでいた、ということなのですが、この"fexting"とは一体何なのでしょう？

WASHINGTON (AP) — When President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden disagree, they don’t hash it out in front of other people. Instead, she says, they argue by text — “fexting” as they call it.

Jill Biden also told Harper’s Bazaar magazine in an interview that her divorce from her first husband taught her to be independent and that she has drilled that lesson into her daughter and granddaughters.

上記に引用したAPの記事には詳しい説明が無いのですが、ジル夫人が意図した"fexting"の意味というのは、

fighting and texting

のことだそうで、text(ing)（メールやSNSのメッセージ上）で口論する（fight）ことを指すようです。

ところが、タブロイド紙のニューヨークポスト紙によれば、"fexting"には別の意味で使われることもあり、それが如何わしい意味合いだと言うのです。

But while the Bidens might think the slang term is a cute amalgamation of the words “fighting” and “texting,” Urban Dictionary defines the word as a crude colloquialism that actually means “f–king while texting.”

以前取り上げた、"sexting"とほぼ同義の意味合いで用いられるようです。

"fexting"というのはネット世代の若者の造語だろうと思います。ファーストレディの発言があげつらわれてしまったのは、大人が若者言葉をよく知らずに使うと思わぬ失態になりかねないという一例かも知れません。

"fexting"をネット検索すると、如何わしい意味の他にも、"fake"と"texting"を併せた単語という解釈で、スマホでメッセージを打っているようなふりをする、という意味でも使われるそうです。

shrinkflation

新型コロナウィルスがもたらしたパンデミックによる、個人消費や流通への打撃、原油価格高騰、加えて、ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻がもたらしている政情不安と世界経済への影響・・・。

様々な要因が重なって、我々一般消費者の懐具合にも直接的な影響が出始めていますが、その実感は？

今日は、"shrinkflation"という単語を目にしました。

John Catsimatidis, the billionaire owner and CEO of New York City supermarket chain Gristedes, urged Americans to "buy" now because food inflation will only get much worse.  

"I've seen price increases coming through for the month of March. I've seen them coming through April and May. Between price increases and shrinkflation -- where it used to be 32 ounces, now it's going to be 28 ounces – it's anywhere from a 12 to a 20% increase in food prices," Catsimatidis told Brian Kilmeade on "Fox & Friends," Tuesday.

アメリカ国内では今後益々のインフレが見込まれるということで、スーパーマーケットチェーンのCEO自らが、買えるものは今買っておくべき、などと発言しているようです。（買い占め行動を煽るのではないかと個人的に思うのですが。)

ここで"shrinkflation"という言葉が出てきます。何のことか、よく分からなかったところ、32オンス（900g）だったものが28オンス（650g）に、と続き、内容量の減少の話であることが分かります。

つまり、直接的に価格が上がるのではなく、商品の内容量が減ることで、実質的に高い買い物になる、ということです。

上昇する生産・物流コストにどのように対処するか、は製造業者の悩みの種です。価格に転嫁すれば消費者離れを引き起こします。よって、価格は据え置きでも、内容量を（消費者には分からないように）減らす、という残された手段に出ざるを得ない、というのです。

お分かりのように、"shrinkflation"は"shrink"（縮小する）と"inflation"（インフレ）を合成した、かばん語です。

metaverse

スポーツアパレル大手のナイキ（Nike）が、RTFKTという新興企業の買収を発表したそうです。買収額は非公表。

RTFKT社（アーティファクト、と発音するそうです）は非代替性トークン（Non-Fungible Token; NFT）と呼ばれる技術を導入し、ヴァーチャルスニーカーなどを開発することで知られており、ナイキ社が目指している「メタバース」構想への一歩と目されています。


Nike announced its first substantial foray into the metaverse yesterday (Dec. 13) with the purchase of RTFKT (pronounced “artifact,” of course), a non-fungible token (NFT) studio that produces digital collectibles, including virtual sneakers. They did not disclose the value of the deal.

“This acquisition is another step that accelerates Nike’s digital transformation and allows us to serve athletes and creators at the intersection of sport, creativity, gaming and culture,” said Nike president John Donahoe. Nike last indicated it was getting into the metaverse in November, when it quietly filed over half a dozen of its signature trademarks with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) “for use online and in online virtual worlds.”

With the acquisition of RTFKT, Nike is one step closer to offering goods emblazoned with its signature swoosh to online communities. The opportunity looks lucrative—while RTFKT has only been around since 2020, it’s already raked in millions of dollars for virtual sneakers.

ところで「メタバース」（metaverse）って、いったい何のこと？

今年になって聞くようになった単語です。特に、SNSのフェースブックが、"metaverse"を意識して、社名をMetaという名称に変更したことが記憶に新しいのではないでしょうか。

"metaverse"は、～の後に、あるいは～を超えた、という意味の接頭辞meta-と、universe（空間、世界）という単語が結合した、いわゆるかばん語です。

手元の辞書には載っていませんし、またオンライン辞書の類にもまだエントリとして掲載しているものはほとんど無いようですが、ウィキペディアなどによりますと、SF作家のNeal Stephensonが1992年に発表した小説で使われたのが最初ということですから、意外と古いものだということになります。

"metaverse"という言葉の成り立ちは上述したように、（既存の）空間、世界を超えたもの、ということから、ヴァーチャル空間の中で構築される三次元仮想空間という概念を指すそうです。

どんな世界なんでしょうね。アラフィフ親父にはだんだんとついていけない感じがしています（苦笑）

killware

テロ、大地震、温暖化を原因とする大規模自然災害、新型ウィルスによるパンデミック、・・・と、想定外の出来事が、忘れたころに、数年毎、もしくは毎年のように起きています。

新型コロナによるパンデミックの終息はまだ見通せませんが、次にどんな「想定外の出来事」が発生してパニックになるかと考えると、個人的にはサイバーセキュリティが絡む事故や大規模犯罪ではないかと思います。

そんなことをぼんやり想像してみたりしていたのですが、最近、"killware"という用語が登場したらしいということを知りました。

As most Americans are still learning about the hacking-for-cash crime of ransomware, the nation’s top homeland security official is worried about an even more dire digital danger: killware, or cyberattacks that can literally end lives.

USA Today紙の記事で取り上げられているものですが、"killware"とは、言うまでもなく、"kill"と"software"が結合した「かばん語」です。

コンピューターウィルス、という言葉が一般的になったのはいつ頃だったでしょうか。その後、コンピュータや携帯電話、スマホが日常生活の必需品と化し、スパイウェア（spyware）とかマルウェア（malware）、ランサムウェア（ransomware）といった用語が生まれ、新聞等、メディアでも普通に使われるようになりました。振り返ってみると、ランサムウェアという言葉に初めて触れたのは6年も前のことですが、インターネットの技術進歩は速く、今や"killware"と呼ばれる時代だということです。

ちなみに、新語の典拠をUSA Today紙の記事に求めてみますと、この"killware"という用語を最初に用いたのはリサーチ会社のGartnerのアナリストであるWam Voster氏のようです。

A short glimpse in recent history shows us that attacks on OT (Operational Technology) are nothing new. Just think about the Maroochi Shire incident in 2000, Stuxnet in 2009 or Industroyer in 2016. A stark example is the Triton malware first identified in December 2017 on the OT systems of a petrochemical facility. Its purpose was to disable the safety instrumented system (SIS) built to shut down the plant in case of a hazardous event. If the malware had been effective then loss of life was highly likely.  It is not unreasonable to assume that this was an intended result. Hence “malware” has now entered the realm of “killware”.

近年多発しつつある、社会インフラをターゲットにしたサイバー攻撃について言及しており、文字通り人々の命を奪いかねないインシデントを引き起こすものです。

あらゆるものがインターネットに接続されつつある現代社会において、大きなリスクであることは論を待たないでしょう。

finsta

アメリカの上院議会でSNSの大手フェースブックが取り沙汰されています。

アメリカではインスタグラムなどのSNSが若者の精神衛生に与える悪影響が言われており、10代の若者の自殺企図につながっているとの報告もあるそうです。

同社の安全性を担当する役員に対する聴聞会は3時間にも渡り行われたそうですが、質疑の中で、"finsta"なる新語が飛び出し、メディアで話題になっています。

Sen. Richard Blumental asked a top Facebook executive on Thursday if the company would “commit to ending ‘finsta'” – apparently unaware of the term’s true meaning.

Blumenthal (D-Conn.) questioned Facebook’s Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis as part of a Senate committee hearing that followed a Wall Street Journal report that the company’s internal research had found its platform Instagram makes “body image issues worse for one in three teen girls.”

There were several seconds of silence before Davis answered.

“Senator, again, let me explain,” she began. “We don’t actually – we don’t actually do ‘finsta’.

私自身、この記事を読むまでは知りませんでしたが、"finsta"というのは、"fake"と"Instagram"のかばん語で、いわゆる「裏アカウント」のことを指します。

フェースブックへの質問を担当したBlumenthal議員は御年75歳ということで、インターネット、SNSの最新事情に通じていることを期待するのは難しいというものでしょう。

両者の間では"finsta"を巡って珍妙なやり取りが続き、議論がかみ合わないまま聴聞会は終了したようです。
