aura farming

昨日の投稿でOxford Dictionaryの2025年の1語に選出されたという、"rage bait"という表現を取り上げました。

Word of the Yearに関しては複数の辞書出版社が独自の基準で毎年発表していますが、その年の1語に選出される単語がある一方で、次点となった表現、選出されなかった単語、表現というのも興味深いものです。

Oxford Dictionaryによれば、最終選考には3つの表現が残ったようですが、次点となったのは、

aura farming

という表現だそうです。

The wait is over—the official Oxford Word of the Year 2025 is rage bait.

"rage bait"という表現の意味するところについては、記事の解説を読む前から大体わかっていました。一方、"aura farming"については初めて聞くもので、意味も想像がつきませんでした。

やはり2025年に流行った表現のようですが、この表現を取り上げた今年半ばくらいの記事を引用します。

Aura farming is all about cultivating the coolest version of yourself. Think well-tailored suits, lots of grayscale, serious stares and sharp angles.

Kids have always wanted to be cool – now they get to farm for it.

By the simple act of being cool or mysterious: striking a cool pose, or performing great feats of coolness – a strike when you go bowling, flawlessly landing rubbish in the bin from 5 metres away, or completing a new personal best at the gym.

この説明を読むと、"aura farming"とは自分自身をよく見せる、クールさを演出するための努力、みたいなところかと思われます。

他人に対して、自分の好印象を植え付けたいという本能的な欲求は誰にでもあろうかと思います。

そうした欲求は現代においてはネット、とりわけSNS上でいやがうえにも増幅されているのではないでしょうか。

It refers to actively curating your personality by choosing the way you look, behaving a certain way, and associating yourself with things that make you desirable, interesting and appear effortlessly cool. It is like cultivating a charisma, an aura, especially on digital mediums.

SNSのタイムラインを覗けば、"rage bait"がある一方、投稿者自身を見栄えの良い写真や動画と共にこれでもかとアピールする投稿に溢れています。

結局のところ、"aura farming"も如何にSNSで「勝ち組」となるか、という心理を映し出したインターネット時代の単語（表現）なのだと思いました。

なお、"aura"とはカリスマ（charisma）、それを"farm"するとは、耕す、飼育する、世話する、という意味ですが、"farm"にはビデオゲームにおいてポイントを稼ぐためのアクション（しばしば単純で反復的）を繰り返す、という意味あり、そこから来ているもののようです。

自身のカリスマのためには写真や動画を「盛る」努力はかかせません・・・。

"aura farming"という表現には多少の皮肉が込められていると言えます。
