六つ子誕生 ― sextuplet

アメリカ・バージニア州で六つ子が誕生しました。

赤ちゃんが欲しいと17年間も願いながら叶わなかったところ、いきなり6人も家族が増えた、ということでさぞかし驚いたことでしょう。


For 17 years, Ajibola and Adeboye Taiwo tried to have a child but had no luck.

Until now — times six.

Ajibola Taiwo gave birth to sextuplets this month at a Richmond hospital, and doctors said the three boys and three girls, along with their mother, are doing well. It is the first time sextuplets have been born at VCU Medical Center, officials said.

と言います。

sex-は数字の6を表すラテン語のsextusから来ています。

双子は何と言うかご存知ですね？そうです、"twin"です。

では、三つ子は？答えは、"triplet"。以降、


四つ子が、quadruplet
五つ子が、quintuplet
六つ子が、sextuplet
七つ子が、septuplet
八つ子が、octuplet
九つ子が、nontuplet


と続きます。

一度に10人はどうなるのでしょうか？

ラテン語で数字の10はdecemですから、


decuplet


という単語がありますが、さすがに10人の赤ちゃんのような意味としては載っていませんでした。
