変わった複数形（３） ― dice

変わった複数形の第3回は、ダイス（dice）です。

サイコロのことであることはご存知ですね？

"dice"は複数形ですが（2個セットで使うから、というのがその理由で、"pants"や"trousers"などと同じように、"a pair of dice"と表現するようです）、単数形は、"die"です。

この"die"には機械や工具の金型という意味もあり、その場合の複数形は単純に複数形の-sを付加した、"dies"となっています。

さて、"The die is cast."という有名なカエサルの言葉がありますが、この場合の"the die"は”賽（さい）”と訳されることが多く、つまりサイコロのことです。ここは単数形ですから、通常２つがセットのサイコロではなく、1個のサイコロが投げられた、と解釈すべき！？でしょうか。

ということですので、上記のような例はまれなものでしょうか？
