Prius（プリウス）の複数形は？

突然ですがクイズです。

トヨタのハイブリッド車、プリウス（Prius）の複数形は何でしょう？

"Prius"という単語は、”～に先立つ、～の前に”という意味のラテン語です。従って、形容詞、もしくは副詞と解釈されるものですが、商標名としての"Prius"の複数形を募集したところ、"Prii"がトップだったということで、オフィシャルに"Prii"が"Prius"の複数形として採用されたようです。

"-us"や"-um"で終わる名詞の複数形が、"-i"となる例は他にもあります。例えば、

alumnus → alumni （同窓生）
cactus → cacti （サボテン； ただし、複数形としては、cactuses、cactus（無変化）もあり）


などですが、元々はラテン語の格変化を受け継いでいるものです。

ラテン語の格変化の複雑さは有名ですが（私も格変化で脱落しました・・・）、英単語の中にはラテン語の格変化をそのまま受け継いでいるものがあります。

今週はそのような単語を特集してみたいと思います。
