動詞の"out" ー out

米カリフォルニア州で、ミドルスクールの教師が生徒の性自認を生徒の親と共有することを容認するという司法判断がなされたとのニュースを読みました。

性自認（gender identity）とは、自らの性をどのように認識するかという話ですが、つまりはトランスジェンダー、LGBTQと言われる、生物学上の性とは異なる性を自認する子供のことを親に話すことの是非が問われているものです。カリフォルニア州では不可とされてきましたが、一部教師が訴えを起こしていたという背景があります。

A federal judge said California schools cannot prevent educators from disclosing their child’s gender identity to parents, and ordered that schools limit the ways in which they affirm a student’s gender identity.

“When it comes to a student’s change in gender identity, California state policymakers apparently do not trust parents to do the right thing for their child,” U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez of San Diego wrote Monday. “So, the state purposefully interferes with a parent’s access to meaningful information about their child’s gender identity choices.”

The Legislature’s LGBTQ Caucus denounced the ruling as “retaliatory politics” designed to promote “forced outing policies that pit families against school officials all at the detriment of students’ mental health and academic success.”

記事のタイトルに、

allow teachers to out transgender students to parents

とあります。ここでの"out"は動詞となっていますが、本文中は、

disclosing their child’s gender identity to parents

というくだりにある"disclose"に相当する意味です。

オンラインのAmerican Heritage Dictionaryでは、

To expose (someone considered to be heterosexual) as being gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

という定義を確認できます。この定義は、異性愛者と思われている人が実は同性愛者であるということを暴露する、という意味であり、本人の同意を得ずに、また本人の意向に反して、というような言外の意味合いが滲んでいます。

手元にAmerican Heritage Dictionaryのハードカバー版（Third Edition）があるのですが、その中では"out"のエントリに動詞の意味はあっても上記の定義は載っていません。出版年をチェックしてみると1996年でしたので、このような意味合いはそれ以降に追加されたということになります。

日本語においても「アウティング」は本人が望まないのに性自認をばらすという意味で知られるようになりましたが、いつくらいからでしょうか。あまり昔のことではないように思います。

そもそも、こうした性自認というコンテクストにおける"out"という表現は、"come out"（日本語でカミングアウト）という動詞句から来ており、その意味するところは自分自身の性自認を自ら公表する、という意味でした。そして、この"come out"とは"come out of closet"というフレーズから来ているもので、"closet"とはプライベートのメタファーであり、同性愛者であることをプライベートなものとして隠してきたところから、一転してそれを公にする、ということを指したものです。

手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemismsに、

…to out, to acknowledge publicly that you are homosexual, and to be outed, to be thus exposed.

という説明があります。また、

Such acknowledgement, whether under duress or voluntary, is called outing.

ともあります。

これら動詞の"out"は自動詞と考えられますが、今回取り上げた記事における"out"の用法、またAmerican Heritage Dictionaryオンライン版での定義は他動詞であるという違いがあります。
