R-word

トランプ大統領の口汚さは今に始まったことではありませんが、その発言（SNSへの投稿内容）がまた物議を醸しています。

問題はトランプ氏がミネソタ州知事の移民対策を批判する中で"R-word"を使ったということです。

House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared a bit flummoxed when a reporter asked him on Dec. 2 for his thoughts on President Donald Trump's recent use of the R-word to describe Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Trump used the slur in a Truth Social social media post on Thanksgiving while accusing the governor of letting "refugees from Somalia" take over the state and commit fraud. When asked by reporters three days later about the word, Trump responded, "Do you have a problem with it?"

While the word was introduced as a medical term in 1961, it has evolved over the decades to become a slur used to demean people with and without disabilities. Disability advocates seek to end its use.

人前で使うのが憚られる言葉の中に、いわゆるF-wordと呼ばれるものや、黒人差別につながるN-wordなどがあるということは知っていましたが、"R-word"が何を指すのかについては知りませんでした。

こういった差別表現を取り上げるニュース記事の常として、具体的にどのような表現、言葉が問題になったのかが分からないことが多いのですが、引用したUSA Today紙の記事もそうで、"R-word"が何なのかについては一切触れていません。

他の記事を当たると、果たして"R-word"とは、

retard、あるいは、retarded

であることが分かりました。日本語で言うところの「知恵遅れ」という意味です。

Trump referred to Mr. Walz — whom former Vice President Kamala Harris tapped over Mr. Shapiro as a running mate last year — as “seriously retarded,” a word widely considered a slur including by the Special Olympics.

The president accused Mr. Walz of doing “nothing, either through fear, incompetence, or both” in the wake of a fraud scandal involving Somali immigrants charged with stealing from government programs during the pandemic.

トランプ大統領はミネソタ州知事のウォルズ氏が十分な移民対策ができていないと批判し、"retarded"の烙印を押したということなのです。

"retard"、"retarded"という言葉は、かつては医学用語であったものの、今日においては差別語であるとされています。

日本語においても「知恵遅れ」にはネガティヴな響きがあるため、「発達障害」といった言葉に置き換えるのが適切とされていると思います。

手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemismでは、

Retarded is educational jargon used to describe a person with a congenital etc. inability learn.

と説明されています。

2010年、オバマ政権下で成立したRosa’s lawでは、"mental retardation"という言葉を差別語とし、"intellectual disability"という表現に置き換えることを定めています。
