今日の1語は"smart"です。そう、「スマート」。

「スマート」フォンばかりいじっている皆さんに、今日は"smart"という単語を改めて知っていただければと思います。

Rather than stay silent, the gate agent walked into the terminal and addressed the irritated passengers head-on.

“When you get on that aircraft, let me tell y’all something,” she said. “Don’t get smart with my flight attendants.”

“Be nice to them,” she continued. “They have a hard day just like we do. The same aircraft that’s coming out, the same people that are on that aircraft, it’s the same people that have been waiting as long as you wait, or maybe longer. So, please, y’all, please, I’m asking, do it for me, be nice to them.”

途中からの引用なので少し背景の補足が必要かも知れません。

飛行機が遅延したために空港で足留めを食った乗客に空港職員が話し掛けているものです。乗り継ぎ便が8時間も遅れたとなれば、イライラも頂点に達しようかというものです。職員は、

“Don’t get smart with my flight attendants.”

と呼び掛けたとあります。

ここでの"smart"はカタカナの「スマート」が意味するところではありません。賢い、お洒落な、優雅な、という意味ではありません。

"smart"という単語を辞書で引くと実に様々な意味があることに気がつきます。上記の引用における"smart"の意味は、横柄な、生意気な、傲慢な、といった意味です。つまり、イライラしているからと言ってフライトアテンダントに八つ当たりしないでほしい、ということです。

意外に思われるでしょうが、"smart"という単語は元々は動詞で、（傷などが）痛む、ヒリヒリする、疼く、といった意味があります。ゲルマン語系の語源であり、ドイツ語のSchmerz（痛み）とも関連があるようです。

傷が痛むというところから、鋭い、きつい、強烈な、といった意味が加わりました。

さらに、鋭さ（鋭敏）は、機敏さや手際の良さといった意味に発展し、賢い、頭が切れる、つまり現在の「スマート」の意味合いに発展したのです。
