voodoo economics

このところ国内ニュースでもトップに報じられるのはトランプ関税とそれに伴う株安の話ばかりで、少々食傷気味です・・・。

トランプ氏は株価下落を意に介することもなく、政策を変更することは絶対に無いと言い切っています。株安は想定内の反応であり、アメリカ経済が復活するのには必要な過程であるとも主張しているようです。

しかしながら、輸入関税の引き上げは米国内の物価の上昇を招き、その割を食うのは米国民だというのは専門家の間でも一定している見方です。

以下引用する記事ではタイトルにおいて、トランプ氏の政策を"voodoo economics"と批判しています。

The administration argues that tariffs will force foreign companies to invest in America to bypass the added costs, thus creating greater employment and making the U.S. more self-sufficient. Further, tariffs are estimated to raise an additional $600 billion a year, which will make America “rich again.”

Except how America will be “rich again” is impossible to understand, since more expensive products will presumably absorb most of this newfound wealth.

President George H. W. Bush at first rejected Ronald Reagan’s acceptance of “supply side thinking” as voodoo economics.” Trump’s passion for tariffs, one could say, depends on “black magic” to work, and the damage begins at home.

"voodoo economics"とは何でしょうか？

"voodoo"とは、ブードゥー教と呼ばれる、アフリカ西部や南米で信仰されている宗教を指すそうですが、呪術や生け贄などを特徴とするその教義は先進国の目からみれば怪しさ満点というものです。

この"voodoo economics"という言葉は1980年代にレーガン氏と大統領を争ったジョージ・ブッシュ氏が、レーガン氏の経済政策（レーガノミクス）を批判して使ったものだと言われています。日本語では「呪術経済」という訳語が見られます。

Voodoo economics is a derogatory phrase first used during the 1980 presidential primaries by George H.W. Bush, then a candidate, to describe his opponent Ronald Reagan's proposals to reinvigorate the U.S. economy. Reagan won that election, and his economic policies came to be known as "Reaganomics."

レーガノミクスは減税により経済が潤うといったものでしたが、結果は赤字が積み上がり、大幅な景気後退となりました。

大統領にしろ、首相にしろ、国のリーダーが変わると目新しい政策が語られますが、そうした政策の中身は"voodoo economics"のように効果のほどが甚だ疑問視されるような内容だったりする訳で、いかがわしい経済政策を指す表現として定着しました。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryで"voodoo"を引くと、

based on highly improbable suppositions : extremely implausible or unrealistic

という定義が見えます。
