日本では勤労感謝の日の3連休でしたね。アメリカでは今週木曜日がThanksgiving Dayとなりますが、年末クリスマスを前にした一大ホリデーで飛行機を利用した大移動が予想される時期を前に、米運輸省が「マナーアップキャンペーン」を公表しました。

The U.S. Department of Transportation is launching what it's calling a "civility campaign" to promote good behavior on flights and at airports, as the busy holiday travel season gets underway. The department is naming the campaign "The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You" and announced the effort in a press release last week.

The DOT shared a minute-and-a-half video that begins with images of airline travelers of decades past, set to Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me." The video then shifts abruptly to tense music and video clips of bare feet swiping on an in-flight monitor and then a series of brawls on flights.

というのも、アメリカ国内で空港、飛行機を利用する客のマナーというのが大きな問題になっている訳で、機内でのケンカや、空港職員に対する暴言、暴力、子供の躾けなど、枚挙に暇がないというのは、キャンペーンのビデオを見ると分かります。

さて、「マナーアップキャンペーン」と書きましたが、記事中の英語表現は、

civility campaign

です。"civility"という単語は礼儀正しさ、丁重さを意味します。英単語の"manner"（通例、manners）にも行儀作法、エティケットの意味はありますが、"civility"には最低限の丁重さ、慇懃という含みがあるようです。

"civility"は名詞ですが、形容詞である"civil"と共に、ラテン語で市民を意味するcivisを語源としています。同じくラテン語で形容詞であるcivilisにも、丁寧な、という意味合いがあります。

ラテン語civilisは、市民という身分に相応しい身の振る舞い、という含意があったようです。ラテン語civisの指す「市民」とは特にローマ市民（civis Romanus）を指す言葉でもありますが、礼儀作法はローマ市民としての矜持でもあったのかも知れません。

米運輸省のマナーアップキャンペーンのビデオを見ると、最低限の礼儀作法の啓発をせざるを得なかった苦渋の決断が見えるようです。礼儀正しい日本人で良かった・・・。
