トランプ米大統領は、キリスト教徒の殺害が相次いでいることを受けてナイジェリアに軍事介入するとSNSに投稿したと報じられています。

President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened U.S. military intervention in Nigeria and the withholding of all foreign aid if its government continues “to allow the killing of Christians.”

Trump said in a post to social media that if Nigeria does not halt the persecution of Christians he may send U.S. troops “guns-a-blazing” to “completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”

ナイジェリアではイスラム原理主義組織によるキリスト教徒へのテロが多発、ナイジェリア政府が対策を取らないならば米国の支援を中止し、派兵するとしています。

トランプ氏の投稿で、

guns-a-blazing

という表現が使われており、引用符付きとなっている他、関連記事のタイトルでもこの表現が引用されています。

何か特別な意味がありそうですが、軍事介入というあたり、銃（guns）を発射する（blaze）というのは文字通りの意味かとも思いました。

辞書には載っていないようなのですが、"with guns blazing"、あるいは"with all guns blazing"という類似のフレーズがあり、総力を上げて、というような意味合いがあるようです。

If you come out with guns blazing or with all guns blazing, you put all your effort and energy into trying to achieve something.

意味合いは掴めましたが、"guns-a-blazing"の-a-は一体何なのか？という疑問が出てきました。

そのあたり、ネットで検索してみますが、なるほどと思うような説明は見当たりません。

基本に立ち返り（?!）、辞書で接頭辞としてのa-をチェックしてみます。一体、英語の辞書で一番最初のエントリである"a"の項を引く人が、引く機会がどれくらいあるでしょうか？！

確信に至った訳ではありませんが、接頭辞a-には、動詞やその進行形（〜ing）の前に置かれて、その行為の最中にあることを強調する意味合いがあるそうです。

そしてこうした接頭辞a-というのは、アメリカ南部や南西部訛りなどに見られることが多いのだそうです。

少し長いですが、American Heritage Dictionaryの解説を引用します。

Prefixing a- to verb forms ending in -ing, as in a-hunting and a-fishing, was once fairly common in vernacular US speech, particularly in the highland areas of the South and in the Southwest. Such verb forms derive from an Old English construction in which a preposition, usually on, was placed in front of a verbal noun—a verb to which -ing had been added to indicate that the action was extended or ongoing. Gradually such prepositions were shortened to a-. The -ing forms came to be regarded as present participles rather than verbal nouns, and the use of a- was extended to genuine present participles. Eventually a- disappeared from many dialects, including Standard English in the United States and Great Britain, although it is still retained today in some isolated dialect areas. Today, speakers who use the a- prefix do not use it randomly. Rather, a- is only used with -ing words that begin with a consonant, have stress on the first syllable, and function as part of a verb phrase, as in She was a-running.

この解説にありますように、元はonという前置詞がその役割を果たしていたようです。前置詞onを動名詞（〜ing）の前に置いて、動詞が示す行為が進行、発展の途中であることを意味したというものです。このonがいつしかa-に取って代わられたようです。

では、トランプ氏発言の"guns-a-blazing"はどう訳すのが適当か？

日本のメディアの報道でこれを直接訳したと思われるものはあまり多くないようでしたが、

といったものが見られました。
