クーデター企図の罪で懲役27年の判決を受けていたブラジルのボルソナロ元大統領が、自宅軟禁中に逃亡を企てたとして逮捕されたと報じられています。

Brazil’s former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro has claimed he tried to damage his electronic ankle monitor “out of curiosity” after he was arrested at his villa owing to suspicions he was poised to abscond.

In a video released by the supreme court, Bolsonaro – who was recently sentenced to 27 years in prison for masterminding a military coup – can be heard admitting to a security official that he had used a soldering iron to tamper with the black tag.

The video showed the device badly damaged and burned on both sides, but still on his ankle.

2022年の大統領選では左派政党のルラ候補（現大統領）に僅差で敗れましたが、選挙の無効を訴えていました。懲役27年の判決後は自宅軟禁されていましたが、所在を把握するため足首に装着されるタグを破壊しようとした疑いが持たれているようです。

実際ボルソナロ元大統領はタグを壊そうとしたようですが、

を使ったとあります。"soldering iron"が何を指すのか分からなかったのですが、"solder"とは「はんだ」のこと、"soldering iron"は「はんだごて」を指す英語でした。

読者のみなさんの中には「はんだ」と聞いて、「何それ？」と思う人もいるかもしれません。

小生は「はんだごて」を持っていますよ。

「はんだ」というのは電子工作などで回路の接点を溶接するのに使う、鉛を成分とする材料のことです。「はんだごて」は熱して「はんだ」を溶かすのに使います。

父親がラジオ工作の類が好きで、幼い頃から工具箱やその中に入っている「はんだごて」は身近な存在でした。「はんだ」と聞くと、溶かした時の特有のにおい（ヤニのにおい）が甦ってきます。

「はんだ」を指す"solder"ですが、"solid"という単語と語源を同一にします。
