記事見出しに使われる短い単語（４） ― woe

今週のテーマは記事の見出しに使われる単語です。4日目の今日は、"woe"という単語です。

この単語は前から気になっていたのですが、何となく分かった気になってそのまま放っておいた、というのが正直なところです。

例えば以下の用例です。

The Dubai Financial Market (DFM) General Index fell more than 5 per cent this morning, which was its biggest drop since January. It is down 14 per cent from it's high in April.

"woe"という単語は、


悩み
悲嘆
苦悩


などという訳語で紹介されており、“文語”となっています。新聞記事と言うよりは小説なんかで使われる単語だと思うのですが、その短さがヘッドラインに適しているのでしょうか、見出しでよく見かける単語です。

同義語としては、


sorrow
grief
regret


などですが、大抵の場合は理想と現実のギャップに苦しむ、その状況を指して用いられることがほとんどだと思われます。上記の引用では、"trouble"の代わりに使われているのですが、"woe"という単語は単なるトラブルというのに加えて特別な色合いを付加しています。

話題は同じですが、ここでは"anxiety"というのに、見出しにおいて"woe"を用いています。"anxiety"は”不安”を意味する一般的な単語ですが、"woe"という単語が見出しにあると、何だか嘆息が聞こえてきそうな感じがします。
