アル・パチーノさんの娘を逮捕 ― DWI

実は小生、アル・パチーノは結構好きな俳優の一人なもので、ヘッドラインがすぐに目に付いてしまいました。


Al Pacino's daughter arrested on DWI charge

Al Pacino’s 21-year-old daughter was busted in lower Manhattan this morning for DWI after admitting she threw back a few beers and smoke pot, police sources told The Post.

Julie Marie Pacino, an aspiring film director, was nailed around 1:30 a.m. at a West Houston Street checkpoint near Washington Street, the sources said.

She had a male passenger in the car, a 2009 Mercedes with California plates that had an expired registration.

アル・パチーノに娘がいたんだ・・・という程度ですが、有名人の家族というのは大変だなあ、というようにも思います。勿論飲酒運転は許されるべきではありません。

さて、今日の単語ですが、"DWI"は、

driving while intoxicated

の頭文字を取ったものです。つまり飲酒運転のことです。

ヘッドラインを見たとき、DWI、イコール飲酒運転とは分からなかったのですが、英和辞書にはDWIのエントリがありました。

記事中には、DWIを説明していませんので、English speakerには自明の単語なのでしょうか。

余談ですが、New York Postはアメリカのいわゆるタブロイド紙のようですが、New York TimesやWashington Postのような上品な（！？）新聞と違って、俗語表現満載といった感じがします。

上記の引用でも、普段はあまりお目にかからない（学習英語ではまず習うこともない）表現が多数見られます。

”逮捕する”というだけでこんなにいろんな表現があったんですね・・・。
