多数派工作 ― politicking

辞任表明した菅首相の後継を選出する民主党代表選が本日のトップニュースになっています。お盆明けくらいから、国民不在の政治ショーがまた始まったかとほとんどあきれていますが、海外メディアも5年間で6人も首相交代と冷たい視線を投げかけながらも、しっかりと取り上げています。

さて、日本語のニュースでもよく聞きますが、何某政党の中で繰り広げられている”多数派工作”のことを英語で何と表現するものかと思っておりましたところ、下記のような記事に巡りあたりました。


TOKYO—As the clock ticks on Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan's administration, candidates jockeying to succeed him have turned to making deals and courting allies.

Mr. Kan has pledged to resign after the passage of two bills that should get through Parliament on Friday, and the ruling Democratic Party of Japan's lawmakers are expected to choose their new leader Monday.

The leadership race is on, dominated by old-fashioned politicking aimed at winning over large party factions, many of which vote in unison. Gone for now is any real debate over how to deal with major national challenges—ranging from restraining a too-strong yen, to recovering from an earthquake and tsunami that claimed more than 20,000 lives, to dealing with a post-meltdown nuclear plant.

“politicking”という単語は、無論”politics”、”politic”という単語から派生したもので、”~ing”は動詞の現在進行形、あるいは現在分詞形につけられる語尾ですが、ランダムハウス英和辞書によりますと、”政治工作”という訳語が見えます。スペルを見てお気づきと思いますが、挿入されている”-k-”は口調（発音）上の必要性からのものです。

”多数派工作”という訳語はありませんが、内容からしてその概念を示していると言えるでしょう。

引用記事では、

となっており、この一連の長い表現で今回の”多数派工作”を指していると思いますが、要は"politicking"の一言でもほとんど同じではないでしょうか。

それよりも、"old-fashioned"という形容には、侮蔑の意図を感じます。まあ言われても仕方ないですが・・・。
