mind-boggling

"boggle"という動詞は、びっくり仰天させるとか、たじろがせる、という意味ですが、これは"bogle"という”お化け、幽霊”を意味する名詞から派生したものだということです。

名詞の"bogle"は、"bug"という名詞の異形とされており、この"bug"はウェールズ語でお化けを意味する"bwg"が、中期英語"bugge"に発展し、"bug"となったということです。

ちなみにここでの"bug"は虫という意味での"bug"とは別の単語で、かつては幽霊という意味で用いられていたようですが今は使われていない廃語ということになっています。

お化けに遭った時のびっくり仰天、たじたじ、からは随分発展していると思いますが、"mind-boggling"は、度肝を抜くような、という意味に加えて、信じられないような、という意味、さらには非常に難解な、という意味でも用いられます。

まず下記の引用ですが、これは前者の意味に近いと思われます。

というものが挙げられていました。この意味にぴったりの具体例として、以下のようなものがありました。
