英語の中の猫（３） ― fat cat

今週のテーマ“英語の中の猫”、3日目の今日は、"fat cat"という表現を取り上げます。 

直訳すれば、“太ったネコ”ということになりますが、意味は様々あるようで、ランダムハウス英和辞書では、 

金持ち

著名人

お偉方

多額の政治献金をする支持者

高給取り

などの意味が列挙されています。

いずれも多少の蔑みがある、といってもよいと思いますが、金持ちとデブ（fat）はイメージが重なるのでしょうか？

Fat-cat public officials are to be hit with higher pension contributions than previously thought, ministers announced yesterday. They will have to pay an extra 6 per cent of their salaries towards their gold-plated pensions, on top of what they already contribute. It had been expected that top civil servants and other senior figures such as chief constables, judges and hospital consultants would face a 5 per cent increase. 

The move, which will also affect the highly-paid heads of large schools and the chief executives and department heads of local councils, will cost senior staff hundreds of pounds a year.

"fat cat"が形容に用いられるのは、上記の引用例でもそうですが、役人とか政治家、会社のお偉いさん、とか、やはり一般庶民から見ればいけ好かない階層の人たちのことについて言う時が多いようです。
