日本の高校生がニュージーランドの空港で足止め ― quarantine

インフルエンザが流行しています。愚息が通う小学校でも一部学級閉鎖になっているということで、流行のピークにあるようです。

ニュージーランドのオークランド空港で、ホームステイの目的で渡航した日本の高校生が足止めを食った、というニュースが目に留まりました。何でも、この団体客の一部がインフルエンザ様の症状を呈したためということです。着陸後、防護服着用の医師が救急車（5台！）に乗って駆け付けたということですから、大変な騒ぎだったようです。


A group of 73 plane passengers who landed at New Zealand's Auckland Airport suffering flu-like symptoms have now been allowed to leave the airport.

The infected passengers were Japanese schoolchildren, part of a group of 90 students who arrived from Tokyo and were headed on a home-stay trip.

Health authorities were alerted shortly after the Boeing 777-200 landed around 9.20am local time (7.20am AEDT) with the children complaining for flu-like symptoms.

Five ambulances rushed to the scene with medical crews wearing protective gear as they boarded the flight to examine the sick passengers.

”足止めを食った”と書きましたが、Air New Zealand当該便の乗客274名はさぞフラストレーションが溜まったことでしょう。結論から言うとこの話は現地衛生当局の過剰反応だったということで、乗客全員が入国したということです。衛生当局のトップ（厚生大臣）のコメントが下記です。


Health Minister Tony Ryall said the quarantine response was precautionary and those on board the plane were believed to have ordinary seasonal influenza.

"We've been briefed on the situation, and advised that it is Japan's flu season, and there are no reports of new strains of flu there," he told the New Zealand Herald.

"quarantine"は、”検疫”と訳されていることが多いと思います。空港で必ず見かけますね。私はお世話になったことはありません（笑）

この単語、英単語としても基本ウン百単語の1つだろうと思います。わざわざ今日の記事で取り上げたのは、


"quarantine response"


という言い回しに着目したためです。これは上記で”足止め”と書いたことにも関連します。"quarantine"、イコール”検疫”と暗記していると見えにくいのですが、この"quarantine"には”足止め”や”隔離”といったネガティヴな意味が強くあるのです。

語源を繙くと、"quarantine"はイタリア語の"quarantina"に遡るということですが、これは”40日間”を意味するのだそうです。40日間とはつまり、病気に感染していると思われる人が隔離される期間のことです。昔は船旅で、伝染病の疑いあるときは寄港地において40日間上陸が認められなかったということです。14世紀くらいの話です。

このような背景のある単語ですから、単に医学・衛生上の理由に限らず排斥や村八分、政治のコンテクストでは制裁隔離、といった意味でも用いられます。

ということで以上、"quarantine"、イコール”検疫”では分からないお話でした。

飛行機の乗客は40日間も足止めにならずによかったということですね。
