前置詞withの用法を考える

アメリカの女性歌手ホイットニー・ヒューストンさんの突然の死は日本国内でも大きく報道されました。ビバリーヒルズのホテルの浴室内で亡くなったということですが、死因は未だに不明で、検死結果が出るのには数週間かかるという報道もあります。


Whitney Houston was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub, and she had prescription drugs in her room, authorities said Monday.

Two days after her death, Houston's body was taken to a small, Los Angeles-area airport to be flown to New Jersey, where her family was making arrangements for a funeral at the end of the week.

An autopsy was done Sunday, and authorities said there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston's body. It could be weeks, however, before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish her cause of death.

グラミー賞受賞の大歌手の死について、オバマ大統領もコメントしています。


The White House said President Barack Obama's thoughts and prayers were with Houston's family, especially her daughter. Press secretary Jay Carney paid tribute to the singer's "immense talent" and called it a tragedy to lose somebody so gifted at such a young age.

今日取り上げたいのは上記の引用における、前置詞"with"の用法についてです。この"with"はどのような用法なのでしょうか？

言うまでもなく英和辞書で"with"を引くと数多くの用法があります。これらを全て暗記しようとする人はいないだろうと思いますが、オバマ大統領のコメントにある、


thoughts and prayers were with Houston's family, especially her daghter


という部分はこのような場合（つまり人が亡くなったりした場合）における決まった表現、つまり常套句のように思われます。意味内容からしても、恐らくは”ご家族、特に娘さんに対してお悔やみ申し上げます”、といった和訳になるのだろうと思うのですが、手元の辞書などでは確認ができませんでした。

ちなみにコーパスで調べてみると、"prayers are with"、もしくは"thoughts and prayers are with"という表現が多く見られ、常套句であることの証左と思われました。Be動詞以外では、"remain"、"go"なども見られますが、用例としてはBe動詞が圧倒的に多くなっています。
