Silver Airways abruptly scuttled all of the Florida regional carrier's flights and told passengers booked on flights scheduled to depart Wednesday not to go to the airport.

フロリダ州を拠点とするローカル航空会社のSilver Airwaysが突然運航をキャンセルしたというニュースなのですが、記事冒頭、

と出てきます。

"scuttle"という単語は見覚えがあったのですが、記憶にある意味は、急いで行く、というようなものでしたので、記事のコンテクストに合わないと思われました。

辞書を引いてみると、"scuttle"にはいくつかのエントリがあって、ここでは、"cancel"と同じ意味合いで使われているということを知った次第です。（事実、記事のタイトルでは"cancel"という語に置き換えられています。）

この"scuttle"という動詞ですが、興味深いことに、船底に穴を空けることによって沈没させる、というのが元の意味だそうです。そこから、断念する、止める、無効にする、という意味でも使われるようになったようです。

Silver Airwaysは経営が行き詰まり連邦破産法の適用を受けたとのことです。
