アメリカがイランに対する軍事攻撃に遂に踏み切りました。トランプ大統領はホワイトハウスでバンス副大統領、ヘグセス国防長官らを伴い、イラン国内のウラン濃縮施設を攻撃、完全に破壊したと国民に向け演説しました。

このニュースを昨日日曜日、車を運転中に、NHKラジオニュースで速報として聞き、驚きました。というのも、トランプ大統領はイランへの攻撃については明言しておらず、2週間以内に考えるというようなことを言っていたからです。

イランにとってはある意味、不意打ちの側面があるようですが、今朝読んだ記事では、

headfake

なる表現が目に留まりました。

この"headfake"という単語は初めて見るように思います。辞書には載っていないようなのですが、バスケットボールでボールを持った選手が頭を向けた方向とは逆の方向に動く、いわゆる「フェイント」のことを意味する単語だと分かりました。

"It was a headfake," a Trump adviser told Axios. "He knew the media couldn't resist amplifying it. He knew the Iranians might think he was bluffing. Well, everyone was wrong."

引用記事によれば、トランプ氏は外交交渉による軍事攻撃回避のシナリオに言及しつつ、イランへの攻撃準備は着々と進めていた訳で、関係者も報道メディアもトランプ氏のフェイント、"headfake"にしてやられたということのようです。

ところで、今回の攻撃にはもうひとつの「フェイント」があったとのことで、別記事ではまた異なるコンテクストで"headfake"という表現が使われています。

米軍が攻撃に使ったバンカーバスターなる、地中貫通弾が話題ですが、バンカーバスターを積んだ攻撃機に先立ち、囮の戦闘機がイランへ向けて放たれたようです。

先述しましたように、"headfake"とは元はバスケットボールの戦術用語ということですが、取り上げた記事の用例に見られるよいに、敵を欺くフェイントモーションという意味合いに一般化しています。

また、"headfake"は株価のように上がると見せかけて下がったり、あるいはその逆になったりして、予測がつかないことを意味するようです。
