ご存知のようにトランプ政権は2期目ですが、3期目を画策しているという話はかねてよりありました。しかしながら、合衆国憲法では大統領任期は2期8年間が最長と定めており、3期目は不可能です。

当のトランプ氏もこの点は認識しているようですが、3期目への意欲はあるようで、この話題を時々持ち出してちらつかせることに余念が無いようです。

2028年の次期大統領選について、トランプ氏の発言が引用されている部分です。

On Monday, Trump said he would "love to do it" when asked about a potential 2028 bid. He also appeared to rule out the prospect of running on the 2028 Republican ticket as vice president, though said he would be "allowed to do that."

"I guess I think it's too cute," referring to a scenario under which the person elected president would step aside so he could take over. "Yeah, I would rule that out because it's too cute. I think the people wouldn't like that. It's too cute. It's not -- it wouldn't be right."

2028年に大統領候補として出馬することは無理だとしても、副大統領候補としてならば！？

この抜け穴は今年の4月にも取り沙汰された話ですが、トランプ氏自身が、

it's too cute

と言っています。

"cute"（キュート）は、可愛らしいという意味だとは言うまでもないですが、ここではそうではありません。

American Heritage Dictionaryの定義に、

Clever or witty, especially in an impertinent or evasive way, as in falsely suggesting that one is ignorant about the matter at hand.

とあり、これはずる賢い、小賢しい、といった、ネガティヴな意味となります。

以前取り上げましたように、"cute"という単語は"acute"の頭音消失形で、"cute"がカタカナの「キュート」、つまり可愛らしいという意味を持つはるか以前から、上述したような、狡猾さを意味する言葉でした。

トランプ氏は、次期大統領選で副大統領候補として出馬した後に再び大統領に返り咲くという抜け穴的シナリオを"cute"である、すなわちずる賢いやり方だ、と否定してみた訳ですが、果たして！？
