fair shake

ジョージ・クルーニーさんと言えばハリウッドの大物俳優ですが、幼い双子のお子さんのためフランスの片田舎での生活をしているという話を読みました。

クルーニーさん自身はケンタッキー州の出身で農場で育ったそうです。若い頃は田舎の農場を嫌って都会に憧れたと言いますが、考えが変わったそうです。

クルーニーさんとのインタビューが引用された部分に以下のくだりがあります。

"You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like – they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life."

"I was worried about raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life," he continued. ハリウッドを離れてフランスの片田舎へという決断にはお子さんのためというのもあったようです。超有名人の子ともなればチヤホヤされ、マスコミも放ってはおかず、プライベートは無いということです。

"fair shake"の"shake"は揺するとか振動するという動詞ですが、名詞の意味に、

（他から受ける）取り扱い、待遇

という意味があるんですね。

よって、"fair shake"とは公平な扱い、待遇という意味になります。また、

give a person a square shake 

人を公平に扱う

という言い回しもあります。
