ventilatorとrespirator

昨日くらいから、新型コロナウィルスに関するヘッドラインを斜め読みしていると、"ventilator"という単語を多く見かけます。

色んなところで"ventilator"が不足していることから、FordやTeslaといった自動車メーカーが援助に乗り出しているようです。


Ford has announced it’s working with 3M and General Electric to make the kinds of ventilators and masks that are currently in short supply as the world battles the novel coronavirus pandemic. The company joins other carmakers like Tesla and General Motors in helping out the medical community, after idling their automotive plants due to the effects the pandemic is having on both consumer demand and the global supply chain.

It all comes at a crucial time. As more people become infected with the novel coronavirus, there’s an increased need for protective equipment like masks to keep health care workers safe and ventilators to treat people with the worst symptoms of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

どうも"ventilator"という言葉からは、換気扇、通風設備、というようなイメージが沸いてしまうのですが、ここでは、人工呼吸器の意味です。

American Heritage Dictionaryの定義を引用してみます。


1. A device that circulates fresh air and expels stale or foul air.

2. (Medicine)A machine that supplies oxygen or a mixture of oxygen and air, used in artificial respiration to control or assist breathing. Also called respirator.


2番目の意味がそうですね。

ところでややこしいのですが、American Heritage Dictionaryに限らず、多くの辞書ではこの人工呼吸器の意味の"ventilator"は、"respirator"ともいう、というように載っています。（ちなみにですが、研究社新英和大辞典（第五版）では"ventilator"に「人工呼吸器」の意味が載っていません。）

それで、"respirator"を引いてみるのですが、さらに驚くことに、"respirator"には、マスクという意味と人工呼吸器という、2つの意味があるんですね。

再びAmerican Heritage Dictionaryでの”respirator”の定義です。


1. See ventilator.

2. A device worn over the mouth or nose or both to protect the respiratory tract from harmful dust or fumes.


1番目の意味がイコール"ventilator"、つまり人工呼吸器で、2番目の意味はウィルス侵入予防のマスクのことですね。

振り返って、"ventilator"ですが、どうしてこの単語から換気扇とか通風設備を想像しがちなのか考えてみました。

思い当たるのは「ベント」という言葉で、ちょうど7年前の東日本大震災によって引き起こされた原発事故後、頻繁に取り上げられた言葉です。

新型ウィルス感染拡大の要因の1つに、「換気が悪い場所」というものがあり、施設や学校などの対策には定期的、また頻繁な換気が言われていますが、そうした報道に触れていることもありそうです。

"ventilator"もそうですが、vent-の部分はラテン語で風（wind）を意味するventumから来ています。フランス語でも風はventですね。

わたしとしては、"ventilator"から受ける換気扇のイメージを払拭して、人工呼吸器の意味を意識する必要がありました。

さて、この辺で終わりにしますが、このややこしい"ventilator"と"respirator"について、ちょうど取り上げている記事も見つけました。

記事はこちらですが、"ventilator"は人工呼吸器、"respirator"はN95などのマスクを指す呼称ということで、明確に分けています。どちらも不足している、というのは目下、新型コロナウィルスにあえぐ欧米の諸都市において最大の問題です。
