daylight

石破首相が米国を訪問、トランプ大統領と初の首脳会談を行いました。

心配された会談の行方・・・ですが、いきなり関税をふっかけられることもなく、石破首相の面目が丸潰れになるような扱いもなく・・・。まずまずの成果に政府関係者は胸を撫で下ろしていることでしょう。（SNSでは色々と貶されているようではありますが。）

首脳会談について報じた記事をいくつか斜め読みしたのですが、ポリティコ紙の記事の一部に以下のようなくだりがありました。

Amid fast-growing doubts about America’s reliability as an ally, Trump downplayed any daylight between the U.S. and Japan, speaking glowingly about his counterpart and the importance of the bilateral relationship. Trump began an East Room press conference by presenting Ishiba with a photo of them in the Oval Office earlier, then declared the U.S. “totally committed” to Japan’s security and vowed to strengthen economic ties.

アメリカファースト（米国第一主義）を公言して憚らないトランプ大統領ですが、中国や北朝鮮、ロシアなど周辺国の脅威が増す一方、有事の際にアメリカは同盟国として日本を守ってくれるのかとの懸念は常にあるところです。首脳会談では同盟国としての位置付けを再確認するということも最重要課題のひとつとしてあった訳ですが、こちらも取り敢えずは再確認が果たせたということのようです。

ところで、記事では、

Trump downplayed any daylight between the U.S. and Japan

と出てきます。"daylight"という表現に注目します。

"daylight"とは日光、昼の光のことですが、

a perceptible space, gap, or difference

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という意味があるんですね。

認識の差とかギャップという意味合いでも使われるのですが、記事と同じようなコンテクストの例文が辞書に見えます。

denied there was any daylight between the two governments' positions

ランダムハウス英和辞書では、

（密着すべき2つの物の間の）はっきり見えるすき間

という定義があります。「密着すべき」ところがすき間がある、ということでそこから光が漏れてくるのが見える、故に"daylight"なのでしょうか。

認識の差異、ギャップという意味合いでこの"daylight (between) 〜"という表現が使われるのは政治のコンテクストで多いようで、ちょっと検索すると最近の報道記事でも多数の用例を確認できます。
