鳥インフルエンザの影響で卵の価格が高騰しているアメリカでは、1パック（1ダース）が10.99ドル（1,600〜1,700円！）もするため、とても買えないという客が続出しているそうです。

そうした人のためにバラ売りの卵が重宝されているという話なんですが、この"loosie"という表現は元はバラ売りされる紙巻きタバコの1本を指すものだったそうです。

俗語表現となっていますが、"loosie"はそのスペルから想像がつくように、"loose"という形容詞から来ています。形容詞の"loose"には、束ねられていない、包装されていないという意味があり、故にバラ売りという意味になるんですね。
