米俳優のジーン・ハックマンさんとその妻ベッツィ・アラカワさんが先月ニューメキシコ州の自宅で不審死を遂げたニュース記事を読みました。

ガス漏れによる一酸化炭素中毒が疑われたそうですが、捜査の結果、その可能性は薄いということで死亡原因の解明が待たれるというような内容でした。

"The two of them were joined at the hip practically. So, if he became reclusive, I think she did, too. And she was very quiet. Anyway, if she went out on her own and was in the same grocery store with me, it would be easy to not see her. She was small and quiet and very, very focused. I thought she was great."

ハックマン夫妻について、

The two of them were joined at the hip practically.

というくだりがあります。

ここで使われている、"joined at the hip"とは慣用表現で、

used to describe two people who are often or usually together

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という意味です。

文字通りには、腰の部分で繋がっている、という意味ですが、（腰が繋がっていると思えるくらい）いつも一緒に居る、一心同体、仲睦まじい、というような意味です。ここでは、いわゆる日本語で言う「おしどり夫婦」に近いかと。

"joined at the hip"という表現の由来ですが、身体の一部が癒合して産まれてきた双生児から来ているそうです。（Phrase Finder）
