through thick and thin

大荒れのホワイトハウスでの米ウ首脳会談から3日経ちました。頭を冷やして次なるステップを・・・、というところかと思いますが、下記引用するCNNの記事によれば、トランプ氏の怒りはまだ収まっていないようです。

引用部分でトランプ氏の発言が引用されています。その中に、

this country has stuck with them through thick and thin

というくだりがありますが、ここで使われている、

through thick and thin

というのは慣用句で、「大変な時も、また良い時も」、という意味です。

"thick"、また"thin"の持つ意味合いについてこれまでも取り上げたことがあります（thick vs. thin、in the thick of）が、ここでの"thick"とは木々が生い茂っている状態のことで、"thin"とはその反対に木々もまばらという状況を言っています。

つまり、道も定かで無い鬱蒼とした森の中を歩くのは大変な困難を伴いますが、そうでない場合は何とか歩を進めることができるでしょう。これが、困難な状況にあっても、また良い状況にあっても、という比喩的な意味で使われるようになったものです。

トランプ氏の発言は、米国がウクライナに常に寄り添って来た、と言っているものです。だから、もう少し感謝したらどうか、という批判を滲ませたもののようです。

この"through thick and thin"というフレーズは古くからある英語の慣用表現だということですが、元は、

through thicket and thin woods

"thick"の意味に茂みや暗い中という意味や、密集した、混み合ったという意味があるのは、この単語が"thicket"（やぶ、雑木林）から派生していることと関連しています。
