― windfall

The federal stimulus checks received by millions of Americans Wednesday to help ease the economic windfall caused by the coronavirus pandemic were also sent to unexpected recipients — dead people.

Numerous Americans took to social media to share tales of the misdirected dough delivered as part of the $2.2 trillion bailout package passed by Congress last month, including Republican Congressman Thomas Massie.

The Kentucky lawmaker tweeted an image of a text from a friend whose deceased father received a $1,200 check. The father died in 2018.

to help ease the economic windfall caused by the coronavirus pandemic

While wealthy Americans are not eligible for the comparatively measly $1,200 stimulus checks that are now being disbursed to many Americans, they are on pace to do even better. 43,000 taxpayers, who earn more than $1 million annually, are each set to receive a $1.7 million windfall, on average, thanks to a provision buried in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
(Shahar Ziv. How Some Rich Americans Are Getting Stimulus ‘Checks’ Averaging $1.7 Million. Forbes. April 14, 2020.)

The notion connecting the tree sense of windfall with the sense of an unexpected gain comes from the notion of fallen fruit being there for anyone’s taking.
(Merriam-Webster
