イギリスで、新型コロナウィルス感染症防止の外出制限が敷かれる中、不謹慎にも旅行に出かけた政治家に非難が集中しています。

非難の的となっているのは、ジョンソン首相の上級顧問を務めるDominic Cummings氏。

同氏とジョンソン首相は蜜月関係にあるらしく、Cummingsを罷免しないジョンソン首相にも非難が集中しています。

詳細は異なれど、日本の某政権でも似たような話は枚挙に暇なく、まぁどこでも似たようなものなんだなあという感じですね。


LONDON — Never mind whether Boris Johnson should get rid of Dominic Cummings, the real question is whether he can.

To the U.K. prime minister, his top aide — whose lockdown journey from London to Durham has dominated headlines for days — is more than just an effective political adviser. さて、ジョンソン首相がCummings氏を切ることができないのは、政権運営上、同氏が果たす影響力が絶大であることの証左だという指摘があります。

記事中では、


linchpin


という表現が用いられているのですが、これは日本語で言えば「扇の要」とも言うべき表現で、組織の中で必要不可欠な人物のことを言う場合に使われます。

そもそも、"linchpin"とは、古く馬車などで車輪が車軸から脱落しないように嵌められた楔（くさび）のことを指していたようです。

つまり、この"linchpin"が外れてしまっては、車輪は脱落し、動けなくなってしまいます。

そのことから、組織の運営に欠かすことのできない、重要な役割を担う人や物を"linchpin"と言うようになったそうです。
