あり余るほど ー plenty

江藤農水相が辞任しました。地方遊説先で、コメを買ったことが無い、と発言したことが、米価高騰に苦しむ国民の神経を逆撫でするものとされ、内外から批判を浴びていました。

批判を受けて釈明したものの、この状況では夏の参院選を戦えないと判断した石破首相は江藤氏を更迭せざるを得なかった模様です。

つまらない失言をしたものだと思いますが、このニュースは海外メディアでも報じられています。以下はBBC Newsの記事からの引用です。

江藤農水相の失言は、冒頭に書いた、「コメを買ったことが無い」、に続けて、その理由として、「支持者の方々がたくさん下さるので、家の食料庫に売るほどある」（産経新聞）というものだったそうです。

上記BBC Newsでは、"plenty"という表現が引用符付きで使われています。

"plenty"の定義は、

an adequate or more than adequate number or amount of something

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

とあります。英和辞書を引くと「たくさん」という訳語が見えますが、"plenty"とは十分、またそれ以上、ということで、あり余るほどある、という意味合いです。農水相が「売るほどある」と発言したニュアンスを反映していると思いました。

ちなみに他紙（他メディア）ではこの失言をどんなふうに伝えているのかざっと見てみたところ、"plenty"という表現を使っているのはBBCのみのようでした。

But addressing a gathering over the weekend, Eto said he has “never bought rice myself because my supporters donate so much to me that I can practically sell”.

国民の怒りが向けられたのは、「買ったことが無い」という部分なのか、あるいは「有り余るほどある」、もしくは「売るほどある」という部分なのか、はたまた、「支持者がタダでくれる」という部分なのか —— 言うまでもなくこれら全てなのですが、メディアにより表現の仕方や焦点を当てていると思われる部分に微妙な差異があるのは興味深いところです。
