企業の信用格付けを行うことで知られるムーディーズの主席エコノミストが、米国の景気後退を警告しているというニュースを読みました。

曰く、米国経済は景気後退の「崖っぷち」にあるということで、

と表現しています。

「崖っぷち」を意味する"precipice"を今日の1語に取り上げました。

"precipice"の語源はラテン語praecepsであると辞書の語源欄に載っています。

このラテン語praecepsは、接頭辞prae-（英語のpre-に相当）と、頭部を意味するcaputから成ります。

つまり、頭を前に（先に）、ということです。崖から落ちる時、頭から真っ逆さまに落下するので、「崖っぷち」。

同じ語源の単語に、やはり真っ逆さまに落ちるという動詞で、また沈澱や沈降という名詞の意味もある"precipitate"があります。降雨という意味もあります。
