アア溶岩とパホイホイ溶岩 ― lava

ハワイのキラウエア火山が噴火しているというニュースが目に留まりました。

活発化し、噴火口からは溶岩を噴出しているとあります。

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano resumed erupting on Tuesday, firing lava 330 ft (100 meters) into the sky from its summit crater.

It’s the 32nd episode of the volcano releasing molten rock since December 2024, when its current eruption began. So far, all the lava from this eruption has been contained within the summit crater inside Hawaii Volcanoes national park.

溶岩＝"lava"という単語はラテン語で滑るという意味の動詞であるlaborが語源で、イタリア語lavaを経て英語に入っています。

ところで溶岩（lava）にも2種類あることをご存知でしょうか？

かなり昔に知ったのですが、溶岩には「アア溶岩」（aa lava）というものと、「パホイホイ溶岩」（pahoehoe lava）と呼ばれるものがあります。

While on a family vacation in 2018, Jenny Suckale was rambling across an old Hawaiian lava flow when an abrupt change in the jet-black rocks caught her eye. On one side was the smooth, undulating lava type called pahoehoe (pronounced pah-hoy-hoy); on the other was the sharp, jagged kind known as aa (pronounced ah-ah).

Understanding how pahoehoe morphs into aa is more than just scientific curiosity because the two lava types move at different speeds and pose distinct hazards.

「パホイホイ溶岩」というのは見た目の表面が滑らかなもので、これが流れるうちに「アア溶岩」と呼ばれる表面がギザギザした、岩石様のものに変容するということです。

いずれもハワイ語ですが、英単語として辞書にも載っています。
