昨日に引き続き、2人目の米国人が移民取り締まりで射殺された事件に関するニュースからの引用です。

事件を受けて、所轄官庁である米国土安全保障省のトップKristi Noem氏に対する風当たりが強くなっているとの報道です。民主党はNoem氏に対する弾劾を提案しているそうですが、身内の共和党からも辞職すべきだとの意見が上がっているということです。

そして、上司でもあるトランプ氏もNoem氏と距離を取りつつあるとの見方が・・・。

トランプ氏も最初はNoem氏を擁護する発言をしていましたが、射殺の瞬間を撮影したビデオがリリースされたことなどを受け、かばいきれなくなったのではないか、という見方です。

引用した記事では、

Noem was in lock step with the White House’s posture at the time

とありますが、事件発生直後にはNoem氏とホワイトハウスが同調していたことを指します。

ここで、"in lock step"とは、

in perfect or rigid often mindless conformity or unison

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という意味の慣用句だそうですが、初めて見るものです。

"lock step"（lockstepとも）とは、密集行進法というらしいですが、前後の間隔を詰めて進むことを指すもので、集団が一糸乱れぬ行進する様子を想起させます。

歩幅や左右前後を同期させる動きであり、それは意見や見解の一致、同調、という意味で用いられるようになったようです。
