アメリカで若者に人気のソーシャルメディアTiktokについて、米国内での利用禁止命令を巡る議論は4年くらい前から起きていると記憶していますが、このところ再び沸騰しています。

というのも、提供元であるByteDance社に対して、アプリを売却するか否かの決断を求めた期限が1月19日に迫っているからですが、トランプ次期大統領が利用禁止措置に対する融和的な態度を示したことなどから、期限の延期ということも視野に入っているようです。

WASHINGTON, Jan 11 (Reuters) - The lawyer for TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance offered a warning during Supreme Court arguments over a law that would compel the sale of the short-video app or ban it in the United States: If Congress could do this to TikTok, it could come after other companies, too.

The law, which was the subject of arguments before the nine justices on Friday, sets a Jan. 19 deadline for ByteDance to sell the popular social media platform or face a ban on national security grounds. The companies have sought, at the very least, a delay in implementation of the law, which they say violates the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment protection against government abridgment of free speech.

ByteDance社はここが正念場という感じでしょうか、利用禁止措置がもたらす弊害を広く訴えるやり方にでたようです。

曰く、

the law, which they say violates the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment protection against government abridgment of free speech

ということなのですが、要はアプリの利用禁止措置は言論の自由に反したものであるという主張です。

ここで使われている"abridgement"という単語が今日の1語です。動詞は"abridge"です。

短縮する、要約する、という意味がありますが、ここでは、

（人）から（権利などを）奪う

（研究社新英和大辞典）

という意味で用いられており、動詞"deprive"と同義語です。辞書のエントリには古語とあり、Merriam-Webster DictionaryでもArchaicとあります。（American Heritage Dictionaryでは特に注記はなく、"To limit"、"curtail"と定義されています。）

"abridge"という単語には、"abridged dictionary"といった表記に見覚えがあります。内容を縮約した版というような意味合いですので、やはり"abridgement"には、短くする、という基本的な意味があるようです。

ところで、"abridgement"、"abridge"のスペルから〜bridgeのスペルが目につくところですが、語源欄を見てみますと、"abbreviate"と二重語との説明があります。

"abbreviate"という単語は、接頭辞ab-と、短くするという意味のラテン語breviare（また、短いという意味のラテン語brevis）から来ています。"abridge"も語源を同じくしていますが、両者は異なる音韻変化を経て、"abbreviate"と"abridge"という全く別の単語に派生したのです。
